I start my gig and everything is set as I want it, ETTL.....than I chimp at my last shot and see it's BLOWN OUT beyond all recognition. I look at the flash and it's on TTL? I pulled it off, turned it off..Put it back on and still TLL...then a minute later, it's back to ETTL...then back to TTL

Anyone?

Check the contacts of the hot shoe and the flash foot. Make sure they're clean. Also check to see if the hot shoe is coming loose from the body. If so, you'll need to tighten the screws under the hot shoe that hold the shoe to the body. An easy way to check to see if it is the contacts is to push down on the flash into the hot shoe. If the flash stays in ETTL mode that way and then returns to TTL mode when you let off on the flash, it's the contacts (either they're dirty or the hot shoe is coming loose from the body).

See this thread if you need to tighten the screws for the hot shoe:

I agree with Leo, the issue is intermittent connectivity...when the connectivity is broken, the flash goes into default 'TTL' mode instead of 'ETTL' and because there is no TTL sensor to then quench the output (like the film cameras have), the flash is trying to output ALL of its light!

When pressing the flash directly vertical into the camera hot shoe to see if it switches back to eTTL mode, don't forget to give a half press of the camera shutter, so communication gets re-established between camera and flash.

Mine did that due to having a loose shoe on both my camera and off-camera cord. Tightened 'em all up and it's been smooth sailing ever since.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)
