Obama/Mccain are coming to town and my photo editor and i are giong down there to take some shots. My only telephoto lens is a 75-300mm, so I was thinking about renting the 70-200mm f2.8L IS from the camera shop for $45 over the weekend. This has, surprisingly, gotten some resistance from my family members, who say -

"It's a debate, what kind of action is there going to be?" and "You should really learn your camera before you get better lenses." never mind the fact that it's just for one weekend.

I can't debunk either one fully. My only defense is that I would like to have the best lens possible so I can get good shots (to which my sister accused me of "hiding behind technology") and speculate the lighting conditions of the church (where the debate will be) and where the press will be.

When in doubt about the lighting, etc. is it wise to get the best equipment possible?

I've seen the televised debates, they're lit up pretty strongly, but I don't know how this corrleates since I've never shot a debate before. I've also never bothered to look to where the press corp is situated at.

Okay, this page (external link) gives me some idea of how the stage will look, if they use this stage...do you think my 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III will be sufficient in that lighting, or should I rent the 70-200mm?

Never shot a debate, but you would be amazed at what looks like good light really isnt....

I would go with the 2.8

60D, 40D, 24-70L, 100-400L, 50 1.4
