Okey, I've taken a gazillion shots recently of my community, kids, events, etc. There is a local fair coming up, with a photo contest. I don't expect to be up against anything huge (there are a grand total of probably 10 SLR's in the entire island), but was looking for advice.

Two categories I'm planning on entering in: People and "Local Community", showcasing things or events found where I live.

Anyway, other than standard photographic rules, making sure people look at the camera, good exposure, not to cluttered, etc, any former or current judges have any tips for what they look for?

Some photos I've taken, I just smile whenever I open them. Not completely technically brilliant, but they just make you feel happy. Others, are more technical, but would lay people (Its probably getting judged by a local building store owner and doctor or something like that) notice?

I can't post shots, because I don't have permission from the subjects yet, as I haven't chosen the final shots to enter. Yeah, I know I don't technically need permission, but in a small town, I want to make sure I keep my ducks in a row.

Anyway, comments, tips, suggestions? This isn't huge, just a local fair, but I've never sent in shots to anything before (only started shooting a month ago...)

Thanks all!

Be sure to read the contest rules before entering. There are a lot of "contests" out there right now that, upon entry, give full copyright over to the contest holder.

Also, many contest rules state judging criteria.

Probably not a concern with a small, local photo show/contest but you have to be careful regarding rights to the photo.

There are many national/international contests where the fine print says all images submitted belong to the contest orgainzers!

[EDIT] Pimped!

Yeah, not too worried about this, and I'm cool with anyone using these shots. Not in it for cash, just for the fun.

Thanks though.

Noble of you but why just give away your efforts?

Isn't your time worth something? Your gear? The supplies you burn to make display quality prints?

It all has a value and it adds up pretty quickly when you stop and think about it.

Just sayin... ;)
