Minor Degree here, consists of 20 credit hours, 6 classes. Mainly got it to enhance my BFA degree but now after 10 years of design, want to pursue photography fulltime.

BAA in Broadcasting so things like f/stops and shutter speeds along with concepts like Depth of Field and White Balance have been a part of my life for many, many years.

What I've found interesting is that Digital Photography is quite simply Television that doesn't move. We use a light measuring instrument called a Waveform Monitor that accomplish the exact same thing as a histogram except ours moves in real time to what the iris and black level of each camera is doing.

flying photog, I remember the first time I saw the movie 'bladerunner' and the depiction of futuristic digital photography. It scared a lot of us that were making a living with film, especially us processers, but that future is here now and photogs have adapted. The idea that digital photography is tv held still is only made more real when I see the explosion of digital picture frames on the market. Is digital photography going to adapt itself to 10 second film clips framed and hanging on a wall? seems loke less of a leap than the one from film to electrons was.

I doubt it simply because the bandwith necessary to produce high quality moving images is still well beyond what most consumer-level peripherals are capable of.

Remember, that 10 second clip playing on the wall is comprised of 30 frames per second (300 images) which at full res would need quite a bit of memory.

Now in order to avoid getting bored too quickly, you'll probably want several different 10-second "photo clips" so your storage requirements begin to grow almost exponentially.

all self taught a bunch of help from this forum, thanks so much guys. I got offered a internship at my college PR office doing Photography and it looking like they want me to expand into multimedia. My major is computer science which is fitting being that i will be creating a searchable database and possibly writing software to use the database for the college. I did not apply i gave them some of my photos of school events and that day they offered me the spot. Just keep shooting put your name out there and keep pounding man thats all i did. Started shooting for my school newspaper not paid, but getting credit for my photos and now here i am. I just take it one day at a time I am not worried about getting a degree in photography and i will get my B.S. and then see where my life is going.

did you teach yourself

That one. I just took photos for fun, and over a period of several years I (very) gradually figured some things out on my own and figured other things out (like the limitations of my equipment at the time) from the Internet. I've gotten a lot more "intense" about it since investing in a DSLR finally, but it's still the same gradual process of learning. Sometimes I'll come across a gem of an idea on forums (or just something I hadn't known before), and then I'll try it out the following weekend.

what was the outcome?

I have a day job. I've turned down a significant number of offers for paid photography in the last year or so though. For the time being, I'm happier keeping it as a fun hobby. But I feel secure enough about things that I wouldn't think twice about doing paid gigs if and when I needed to.

When I was 15 my friend's dad gave me an AE-1, 50 f/1.4, three rolls of film, and showed me how to set the camera on AV mode.

Since then Ive taught myself everything I know. That was... 7 years ago? Good times, Im glad he was so generous.

I have one gathering dust in my office. Canon digital upgrade costs are small change next to upgrading video equipment, & I got out of it while I still could!

Definitely mentored. My dad was an avid photographer and had a darkroom in the house. By the time I was 12 I was routinely developing and enlarging the BW stuff. He taught me a lot about photography but the mentor I remember most was an old German guy, Fritz. It was my first job out of college and part of my duties was to take product photographs for the patent artists. Fritz was such a perfectionist and knew his craft so well that I couldn’t help but learning. Shot with a 4x5 Speed Graphic, everything manual. Also, Fritzy hated to waste pics and demanded that everything got done right the first time.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Self taught, and still learning. I first picked up an SLR back in 1981 (Canon AE-1) The next thing I got was the book Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. I continue to look for books on the photographic topic that I feel I need the most help in or in the direction I want to go.
