this was taken in the shade and the sun was pretty strong. I spun to manual and deliberately overexposed the image, but it still turned out way dark. Was this because I was metering the wrong area, or should I have popped the flash? I had brought my 420EX but I normally don't use it for outdoor events. Maybe I should read on fill flash?

Either flash to balance it all out, or ignoring the background completely and better exposing for the girls. There's a HUGE gap between the highs and lows there so the background would have to be totally white to get the girls properly exposed without flash.

That's VERY harsh lighting conditions! Your background is already overexposed. A flash would have been the way to go, otherwise zoom in closer to the people and meter, then zoom back and take the pic. This is one of the times that pop-up flash can be useful! lol

If the background they are in front of wasn't important you could have moved to the other side and shot "in" v. shot with the outside. To my untrained eye it just looks like a snapshot of two people talking at an aquarium. You could have re-staged that shot under better lighting unless there was some journalistic issue with that shot.

Well, the one to the left is my colleague at the newspaper, she was interviewing the Aquairum of the Pacific woman on the right. I like to take shots of us journalists in action, and this was one of them. the interview was pretty quick, I didn't have time to back out and head to the other side to have the light on them.

I've never heard of a 3 second interview.

Maybe I should have said "by the time I realized what I should have done, the interview was already over." (actually I didn't realize what to do until I posted this topic.) You can see that my colleague had already lowered the video camera by the time I took the second shot and at that point it was over.

Flash would have been a huge help.. I would have put my camera on Manual Mode, exposed for the background and allowed your flash to light the girls..

And adjusted FEC as necessary.

Would it have helped though? I took a similar shot (very bright background behind my son) and wanted some fill flash. But popping up the flash just massively over exposed the whole scene - presumably because it maxes out at 1/250 and doesn't support hss? Didn't check my aperture (it was wide for a previous portrait shot) but don't know if i could have brought the shutter speed down enough.

Either flash or spot metering. Flash would have been the stronger option.

If you are in Av mode and shooting at faster than 1/250, popping up the onboard flash will cause massive overexposure because the camera will force the shutter speed to 1/250.

Drop the ISO and stop down.

Must have gone something like this....

Your colleague: Do you have a minute for an interview?

Girl at aquarium: No!

.... for you not to have time to move! :D
