40D: any way to save/restore settings?

I've used EOS Utility on my Macbook but I didn't see any option to save/restore the camera's settings.

It would be a real pain to have to recreate all my custom settings and custom menu entries from scratch. That being the case, is there any way to save/restore these things?

Are you talking about settings IN CAMERA???

If so, see your manual regarding C1, C2 and C3 on the camera dial.

Not the way you were thinking.

What I mean is: you can save a bunch of settings to each custom setting dial position, and you can also set up the user defined menu. And on top of that, you can set various custom functions (such as whether or not the shutter button activates autofocus).

It takes quite a bit of time to set all that up.

Suppose you need to do something like send your camera in for service. Chances are they'd reset everything back to factory defaults, which means all your customizations would be wiped clean. The same thing might be true if you were trying to troubleshoot an issue with the camera.

So the question naturally arises: is there any way to save the state of all those customizations to the computer so that they can be restored later?

Not on a 40D. You have to go up to cameras like the 1D Mark III or the 1Ds Mark III to get such functionality. They can save setups to the memory card, which effectively does the same thing as you are asking for.

Guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and acquire a 1DmkIII then.

Well, nothing's impossible in the strictest sense.

Of course, the value of the 1DmkIII might be less than the shipping charges by the time I get around to it.
