Taken last weekend; I used a 70-200 f2.0, 17-55, and 85 f1.8 lenses over the course of the afternoon & evening. First ever panning (I was reasonably happy with what I got for a first time, though I had the lens so opened up as the light faded that not 100% of the rider & bike are sharp. OTOH, that blurriness works to convey motion, too, I think) and first cycling race I've photographed. Whole gallery is here:

the agony & ecstacy of a finish in Cat-4 (winner is the guy closest to the double yellow line with the fist pumps; others with heads down reflect on what might have been):

Thanks. It was fun experimenting with different lenses. The great thing about a criterium is you get LOTS of chances to work on things - same corner, different angle, different spots for panning, etc. since they're doing 30-40 laps/race.

Thanks, Gary. I plan to shoot a few more of these as preparation for the Tour of California next Feb. (where I'll only get one crack at it per stage, probably).

Good stuff! I love shooting crits! I use multiple lenses as well: 70-200, 12-24, and 17-40 are my normal weapons of choice. I just got a 85 f/1.8 that I'll be trying out soon.

My steel Medici is right proud right now. I haven't seen an old steely in a while, other than mine.

Great job on your first cycling pics.!

Nice shots. I'll be shooting at the Tour Of Britain in a few weeks, never shot cycling before. I'll only see them go by once, so pretty crucial I get things right first time. Any tips on settings?
