I have posted this panorama before. However, this time I am looking for c&c.

I love this photo very much, and have hung it in my office. People who have seen this photo usually go 'nice', 'what software did you use', ... I don't get a 'wow!'

So, question is why is this photo not a super photo?

Composition, exposure are both A+. I like it. However, I'm noticing some "ghosts" around the two tallest buildings... Not sure if it's chromatic aberration or not, but it's definitely noticable. The sky in general looks like it has a splotchy gradient. However, this could be the resizing to fit on this forum?

Also, to add, had the water been more 'smooth' I think it would work well to capture the reflections. Otherwise, it's nice...I'd hang it!

I wouldn't worry about what people say...as long as you like it, it's golden. I don't think most people understand the DSLR thing...and the 'quality' of the sceneries that one can capture.

As said before the composition looks nice and the "ghost" around the buildings I see as well. The first thing I see in the photo is the sky. I would have added more depth to the sky by taking the photo about a half hour before it gets dark to get the beautiful colors that the sky gets while it goes down. Since the image includes a lot of sky you would want a little more interest there. I however am really enjoying the reflections in the water. :)

Exactly. Sky is dead, water is not animated enough. It's a great shot of the convention centre but there is nothing interesting to it. No birds, no boat's light trails.

This deserves a longer exposure and some ambience.

You folks have brought forward points that I didn't even think about. Thank you. I like this photo for two main reasons: reeflection in the water and glass buildings, and lighting on the convention center.

I hadn't noticed the ghosting around the tall buildings. Will have to figure that one out.

Please continue to provide your c&c.

Firstly it's a great shot and a nice scene. The thinks I see however are: the point where the water meets the land is pretty much center of the photo and is tilted slightly down to the right.

I would straighten it up and as much as I like the reflections in the water crop some of it so that the water only takes up the bottom third of the photo. If possible I would crop the sky but then you would lose the buildings.

I feel like it's missing something from the right. Not sure what was to the right of the image but it would be nice if it balanced out more, scaled down like it scales up from the left.
It needs balance to get the WOW!
This may not even be possible but if it was that would do it for me.

Nice image though, definitely hangable!!

It's a bit heavy camera right because of the mass of buildings and (IMO) there's too much empty water in the foreground which, because it's so choppy, negates any possible smooth relflections.

Also, the horizon splits the middle of the frame which makes the shot too calm.

I think if you pulled the bottom edge up considerably, you'd get a better dynamic feel.

Take a short cut.... crop the water tighter and maybe try some motion blur or some effect to soften or melt it. See if YOU like the results. What we say helps you grow as a photographer but the shot has to make YOU happy.

I think..... crop out some of the water to lower the horizon and clone back in some sky.

Aside from that already mentioned, it also looks like the horizon is tilted and you probably should have followed the rule of thirds as well.

More generically however I do have another comment. You commented that people don't go "wow" to this shot and I think part of that, aside from technical considerations is simply that there's -a lot- of shots like this around. I think that even if this shot was "technically perfect", you'd still get a rather bland response to it just because there's so many shots just like it in every photo and art gallery around. I have shots of Louisville Ky that, like yourself I really like, but at the risk of being blunt, it's just been done to death.

My advice here is that if you like it, keep it framed and hanging on your wall and just enjoy it yourself. You could probably re-shoot this again and follow all the advice here and have absolutely optimal conditions for shooting it...and still get a bland response from people who look at it.

Peace,
Jim
