Kayell is down for me at the moment, but this is what you want - it consist of one transmitter and one receiver (universal):

Of course, you can buy additional receivers and transmitters, but the set will be cheaper than buying them separately.

EDIT: Kayell just came back up - this is what you want:

The receivers have a rechargeable in them (charger supplied), the transmitter has a little "watch battery" inside it.

ok cool, hey am i heading up the wrong tree if i just saved for another 580EX II and didn't bother with a transmitter/receiver option? would i then not need any transmitters or receivers? ie the 580EX II attached to the hotshoe will transmit to another 580EX II trigger it wirelessly?

Yes you can use wireless ETTL, it's quite reliable inside but outside not so much. You need line of sight outside, and it sometimes still fails in bright sunlight, which can be a pain in the butt.

thanks tim, how about this for a question then. if i bought a 2nd 580EX II could i then have the one mounted on the camera NOT fire, but the slave one fire? and if so, could i then also have the d-lite 4 kit connected using the wired connection and fire it plus the slave? sorry if this is sounding dumb, but i really want to avoid buying more than i have to!

Yes, you can stop the master firing and still have the slave fire, using ETTL or manual. You can also plug the studio strobe into the PC port via cable or radio and have that fire. I don't see why you'd want a studio strobe in manual and speedlites in ETTL though, it'd be messy.

Canon speedlites are expensive, strobes are often cheaper and way more powerful, just less portable.

not really fussed if the speedlite is in ETTL, just want to be able to use it as a hairlight with my existing dlites and then to be able to take both speedlites out of the studio without having to buy the trigger and receivers...

plus i already have the dlites and 1 speedlite...
