I've come to the conclusion that it's time to buy a circular polarizer filter for my Canon 70-200mm f/4 L IS lens.

Someone please explain to me the difference between the following:

Canon 67mm circular polarizer - $39.00
B+W 67mm circular polarizer - $86.50
B+W 67mm Kaeseman (MRC) circular polarizer - $139.50

What difference can I expect to see between #1 and #3 for $100.00 difference?

Canon filters are usually cheap uncoated filters. B+W Kaeseman are edge sealed multicoated filters with the media bonded to the glass and not just a foil inside. B+W has some new coating that they are not charging extra for (as near as I can see) the F-pro series.

uncoated cheap filters have been known to cause a soft focus effect, a not uncommon occurrence.

If you're going with B+W, try www.hvstar.net (external link) for the best prices (usually about 30-40% less than stateside dealers) on genuine B+W filters. I was going to post the links to those particular filters, but it appears that they're out of stock in the 67mm size. But no matter where you buy them, be sure to get the ones that are designated with 'MRC', which is B+W nomenclature for their multicoating.

Stay away from the Canons and Tiffens...shooting with no filter is better than shooting with a bad filter.

Thanks again.
I don't know that I want a $139.50 CP filter though.

Are you sure it is 67mm? My 70-200 2.8 is 77mm.

Ohya, you dont want to get a cheap one ;) . Better to have nothing at all IMO.

I'm betting the increase in size is due to the f/2.8 vs. f/4 aspect.
I never gave the size of the f/2.8 a thought because I can't afford one.

Thats true. The size difference is because of f/2.8 and f/4. f/4 needs smaller size filter.

I am looking for good quality polarizers for my 70-200 & 17-55. Any suggestions?

Well, I know this will go against the established grain here but, I recently purchased (classifieds here) a LNIB Canon 77mm CPF for my 17-55 lens and I'm quite happy with it and the resulting photos that I take but hey, what do I know. ;)
