Could this work?

Ok, Im trying to set up a remote camera, but still get the photos instantly. I know canon has a wireless file transmitter (honestly this is what I need). But they are too costly. So, would this set up work? A pocketwizard Plus II on a Mark III with a Eye-Fi home? Could this eventually fire the camera remotely and send the pictures over a network (that i set up) to a computer?

Eventually I'm building a cheep WFT-E2A...sort of.

Basically it sounds like you want to remotely fire the camera, and then at some point remotely initiate an FTP transfer to your home PC. How far will your PC be from the camera for something like this. I'd put a max distance of no more 300' on such a setup, but less to allow for interference or obstructions.

Yes, the Eye-Fi will be able to send (JPEG only) files assuming there's a WAP in range. You can trigger the camera however you want, and the destination computer for the files need not even be on the local WLAN.

Not as a router, just as a regular device on the wireless network (like your laptop). Range, like any WiFi, is going to be determined by conditions. Mayvbe a couple hundred feet. But if you're connecting to a WAP (not directly to a laptop or PC; has to be a "formal" network) that's on the Internet, it can send your file anywhere in the world. They let you set up to route your photos to SmugMug, Flickr, etc. if you want. But, and I repeat this, only JPEGs.

Thanks Jon - interesting explanation. I work with networks on my day job and we get involved with WAP's and such, but never in this fashion.
