Minolta Auto Meter IVF

I've carried the Minolta Auto Meter IVF for years as one of the primary tools in my meter case along with my custom Spectra Combi II , custom Pentax digital spot meter and a Minolta color temperature meter. This set has worked for me shooting probably over a thousand commercials. In other words I trust them, they all match and work perfectly together and still do today but they are a little old.

What supprised me was that the Minolta Auto Meter IVF is set up to use with strobes, either with the cord plugged into the meter or in non cord mode. Does, or has anyone used this meter with strobes, I'm getting to think I might start out with a single Alien Bee and an Octobox for photographing people and if this meter works as well with strobes as it does with everything else then I'd be thrilled to stay with it. I always felt it took at least 6 months to get used to a meter (yes I've been through many) and rejected many as well. If I got a new spot meter, I carried it along on the belt with the one I trusted for many months, doing comparisons until I was sure it was strong in all cases and to learn to know in what situations it read differently.

Are there special considerations beyond normal metering (incident) readings with flash meters?

I guess the best way to find out if this works is to use it! I'll first try it in non cord mode with the little flash on my G9.

It works, I set it up manual with the flash, fired a test flash, set the camera stop and shutter and it works great.

Any particulars I should look for, I know absolutely nothing about strobes/flash other than my G9 has one and I normally hate it if I use it straight, so I've set up the C1 and C2 to flash at 1 and 2 stops under the ambient light to use just for fill or when I am in close quarters.

The only 'fault' of the Autometer IVf is that it does not have the 1/3 EV shutter speeds of dSLRs, only 1/2 EV shutter speeds from film camera days

That, and it it's getting a bit "old fashioned": It doesn't meter flash to ambient ratio.

That is one of those nice-to-haves if you do not know how to figure that without help! ;)

It *is* nice to have though ;)

On of the reasons I went with a Sekonic L358.
