Depends on the tripod; the center column length will vary depending on the length of the collapsed leg sections, so more sections means a shorter center column for any given height. And don't forget that the specific head you choose may make an inch or more difference in the height of your camera, as can whether or not you use a grip.
Manfrotto, for one, lists heights for their tripods with column both raised and lowered. The 66.5" total height 055MF has a column-down height of 53"; the regular 055XB is 70" raised, 54.1" column down while the 055XPRoB is the same 70.1" but is 55.9" with the column down.
