I recently found a Canon Rebel silver xt new in box w/18-55mm for 356.00 tax and shipping included. also has the battery and charger. Retail box. I now think I want the Xsi and the only difference is about 100.00 Is it worth the difference.

Where are you getting an xsi for $450? But yes, that would be worth the difference.

Are you sure you're not confusing the XTi with the XSi? Because I can see the XTi available for $450 or so, but the XSi goes for somewhat north of that, even used.

The XSi would definitely be worth the extra $100 at that price point, unless you're already heavily invested in CF cards. The XTi, on the other hand, is a better camera (more resolution and improved functionality--I've got one) but you'd have to weigh whether or not those aspects would be used by you, and if so, used enough to justify that extra $100. You may well be better served by putting that money saved toward a battery grip, speedlite or extra glass.

just make sure you check it out at www.resellerratings.com (external link) first...i'm sure you won't want to give them your money afterwards...my guess is you found it thru shopcartusa....and that the store is wilddigital.com...if so they've got a 0/10 rating...that's right...zero

699 is probably the cheapest legit price you can find with lens included

You can buy an XSI from a number of companies for under $400, but you might not ever receive it. shopdigitaldirect dot com has the XSI USA version with Free shipping right now for $339. Wow! What a great deal, right? WRONG!

There are more companies out there willing to steal from you than you can shake a stick at and I'm not saying shopdigitaldirect is one of them ;-)a, but do some due dillagence before you spend your hard earned money. There's no shortage of people who have been ripped off by numerous companies advertising incredible pricing. Losing $1K+ isn't an easy thing to swallow for most folks, but it happens all the time and these companies thrive on newbies or inexperienced shoppers that don't know any better. If you're lucky enough to get a package at your door from one of these low price scammers, make sure to check it out carefully because many people end up with packages that are missing items or have the wrong items inside, etc. Good luck returning anything because these companies don't want to hear back from you unless you're buying more stuff from them. And don't forget to check your credit card statements very carefully because some companies have been known to rack up more charges than you agreed to and even sell your credit card number to others.

It really is pretty simple to buy from a legitmate company. The first thing you need to do is check them out with your local Better Business Bureau. If the company has a bad record, then shop somewhere else or risk losing your money. Here's a link to the BBB where you can check out companies...

www.bbb.org (external link)

Another great consumer resourse is Reseller Ratings. Simply type in the name of the reseller you're planning to buy from and you'll be able to see their score and read reviews from customers. No store is perfect and neither are customers, but if the store has a horrible rating and lots of complaints, then shop elsewhere. Here's the link...

Most of these scammer companies use simple method of advertising that's just like fishing. They cast their line into the internet with a most desirable bait, which is extremely low pricing. We as the fish are already hungry which is why we're shopping in the first place. We want our food (cameras, lenses, etc). Finding an incredibly low price is often too hard for the newer inexperienced fish to pass up and unfortunately they often take the bait at the expense of being caught. The bottom line is that if it looks too good to be true, then it probably is. And if you wish to pursue this incredible deal, then please take the time to truly check it out more thoroughly so you don't get filled and pan fried.

One of the newer tricks I've been seeing from these low priced scammer stores are to create their own ratings to make it look like they're reputable. They'll list groups of other stores with stacked star ratings next to them and include their own reviews, etc, so everything looks legitimate, all for the purpose of taking your money. Both the BBB and Reseller Ratings will give you a more accurate understanding of how well consumers like a given company and how that company treats its customers.

Good luck with everything and do NOT get ripped off.

The best price I found on the XSI with the kit lens from a local retailer was $674 including tax from Circuit City or Best Buy on August 9th & 10th who was selling this camera for $749 - 10% and no sales tax on August 9th or 10th. Also look into the MS LIVE Cashback deal cause there are legitimate companies using this program.

You're right about companies trying to hook people in with low prices. I have found One Way Photo and Shop Digital Direct to be two of the worse companies to do that. They advertise the Canon XSI body for around $250.00 but when you buy on line or call, they seem to always be out. I've been trying for months to buy one from these two companies and all I get is the same srun around. Well, if they are always out, remove the ads, but no, they're just trying to hook people. They care nothing about customer service or satisfaction. I would NOT do business with either one of these stores. If you do, you're just asking for headaches.

Why try from a store that scams?

The $450 price was correct back then. WIth 30% live.com cashback. I got one for $429, but that included the 10% Ebay coupon.

Qadsan, in its entirety, this is a great, useful post. And the above segment is one of the finest examples I've ever seen of not mixing one's metaphors! May I say that you went way out on a line to keep that fish thing happening? :)

The cheapest i've seen the XSi was at Sears for $550, but that's because I work there and someone returned it never opened (i opened it to check that everything's inside) and the thing is, we still have to mark the price down even if it's returned brand new. So it went from 699 to 550 plus my employee discount :)

When Microsoft was doing the cashback (I think it's dead now), I got brand new US warranty XSi kit for about $679 (don't remember exactly offhand, would need to look it up), then applied 30% (max $200 back) and also the 10% Ebay coupon that they sent out, for a total of $429. The cashback was a great thing, too bad it ended. My friend bought several thousands worth of stuff and got 30% back. I heard accounts of some getting thousands back just on the cashback part.
