You are right Tim. The only reason I said to expose half a stop under was that based on the settings I 'think' he is shooting in bright sunlight, harsh lighting conditions. So it will be harder to balance shadows, highlights AND combine with a good exposure on the subject. That and my luck with shooting in AV so the flash does fill has been very hit or miss for me, especially in bright light. Takes too much fec adjusting. Whereas in manual I get consistent predictable results.
If you can get both exposed exactly right then by all means, thats the proper thing to do.
