I just found out that I'm shooting a grad student mixer in a dimly lit bar - ceilings are about 15ft high, walls as below. I would REALLY like to use my strobes two D-lites since this should be a tame mixer and an ideal situation to start experimenting without wasted people around.

Plan to mount a D-Lite 4 with a bogen magic arm and superclamp to one of the corners of the bar - maybe with a gel?

At my disposal are:

D-Lite 4 (2)
580EX (1)
Pocket Wizard Plus II (2)
12 Vivid Color Bogen Gels
8.25" reflector and honeycomb grid set (1)
Bogen Magic arm / Super clamp (1)
Basic softboxes
42" westcot shoot-through umbrella
Lenses: 50mm 1.8, 17-40 4.0L, 70-200 2.8 IS,
(No flash bracket, but do have the off-camera hotshoe cord)

I have MINIMAL studio experience, much less something like this - diving headfirst. Hopefully with a little help from you guys...

It would help to know what you are trying to achieve - if you are looking to take flattering portraits of people then bounce the two D-lites and use the 580 on camera to provide catchlights & fill, if you are trying to take edgy club shots then set both strobes high in the rafters at opposite corners of the set with wide-angle reflectors and you will be able to vary the light patterns you capture just by changing your shooting position and maybe gelling one of the lights.

17-40 will likely give you the most useful focal lengths in this situation.

Hermes - Thanks for the advice, I'll post tomorrow some results. I'll probably need a critique or two. I think a few of the shots came out OK, but there is room for improvement....

I'd like to see your results. I'd have shot ambient probably, so as not to lose the atmosphere. Maybe a bit of extra light on the main subject.
