I sure would like to have a chart listing which lens spec,f-stop etc to be used for different scenarios. I realize this could become magnamonous(is that a word) in size but am speaking of the basics, just to get a feel/starting point. Is this by chance set forth somewhere?

Take a read through here

-=Ben's Guide to DSLR Photography=-

Which will give you more than a few tips.

Basically, there's no fixed list of settings/lenses for any given situation. It's all on gut feel and knowing your kit and the techniques.

No problem. We all start somewhere. And Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure" is a great place to start as well.

I think that all cameras should be sold with "Understanding Exposure". It is the single best book for anyone starting out and many who already think they know what they are doing.

As was mentioned before there could be more than one setting for a particular scene. One person may like the scene a little darker, some a little lighter or some may prefer less depth of field.

One of the great feature of the digital camera is the fact that there is a file with shooting information. One day you could set out to use one focal length at different apertures or different shutter speeds and check the diferences on a computer later.

This is much easier than walking around with a notebook and recording each setting for each frame like some of us did when we had 35mm film cameras.
