Lucky you being able to shoot at the Olympics! It looks like it might have been overcast (?) or in a covered arena (?). .. Nice captures .. though they look like the lighting might have been a challange. (I know the news here has shown a lot of storms over there) Did you pre-focus on the poles?

If I recall correctly, the equestrian events were all at night so it wouldn't be so hot for the horses.

Looks tough to shoot, all of the shots are on wrong timing for me, only shots that sell for me are of horses at peak of jump and thats the point to look for. Thanks for sharing though looks like a funny angle you had to take them at too so probably quite hard.

It has been a long long time since I got a good excuse to bring out the 100-400mm and I had never done a sporting events like this. Hence a lot of wastage (of shots)

After a few rounds, I realised that only a few good angle from my seat. So I spot pre-focused on the poles or some of the larger near the barriers, and waited for the shadows to appear. then squeeze the button.

My 300D is a little bit out of place against all the 40D, 450D and other newer brands+model around me. A fellow spectator was asking to look thru my lens, and ask if I can make the "machine gun" like sound. I said that this is an old-workhorse, no a young gun that rattles. He was laughing....

Not all shots are good, from a sharpness and contrast point of view. I am unsure why, but will not have another opportunity to practise on this or similar event. Only have 1 ticket to this event.

It is in the evenings, between 745 - 1030pm. Even then the temperture is around 27 deg C, the day time past 32 deg C (too warm to be in the open ).

The flood light provides reasonable illumination for the eyes, but does not really register well on the camera. Hence i had to do the shots at ISO800.

Wrong timing ? Actually, it is the 1st time I am seeing this kind of event, other than a 15 sec spot on the news over the years. Do not even know what to aspect. Anything that moves, snap it.

Then I realised that my panning skills are way out of touch. The pre-jump & post jump are some of the better shots that I should be able to manage, and there are 2 spot from my vantage point to make this happen.

Thank you all for viewing and commenting. It is fun to be there, for that once in a lifetime opportunity to be in the gallery of the Olympics.

Old workhorse AF system can't keep up in low light conditions:) Young guns definitely have the advantage here.
