I just got my 580EX II and stuck it on to my 40D. There were no custom functions set on the flash. I tried to go into the 40D --> flash control --> External flash func. setting and my camera tells me "This menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off.

On the LCD of the flash, I see ETTL and the Zoom is at 35mm, and it doesn't change if I change the FL of the lens. The flash also does not fire while mounted. Take it off and I can test fire it fine.

PLEASE HELP!

Make sure that the flash is pushed all the way into the hot shoe and seated properly. Then lock it in by sliding the lock lever all the way to the right. With the flash turned on and the Pilot light lit red, you should see lightning bolt icon in the viewfinder when you half press the shutter button. If you don't, that means the flash is not talking to the camera. Remove the flash and clean the contacts and pins on the hot shoe and the flash foot.

Set the flash mode to Master and you should be able to access that menu

It shouldn't matter if the flash is in Master mode or not. The flash options should be available as long as the flash is talking to the camera.

Thanks all for the responses. I cleaned the contacts, cleared all my custom function settings on my 40D, etc. and nothing helped. Called up Canon and they ran me through 2 or 3 troubleshooting steps. They were wondering if it could be the hotshoe of the 40D, but dismissed that since the 580 ver. 1 I sold worked fine. I also tried the flash on my wife's G9 to no avail. No communication between flash and camera. Was all of a 10 minute call and the Canon rep and he says "Yep, you have a bad flash gun". So I just sent it in to Jamesburg and hopefully they can turn it around rather quickly.
