When I got married, I knew nothing about photography. However, we chose a photographer who took all his wedding photos on medium format. I intuitively knew that the pics would enlarge better although I didn't understand the details.

Go with the 5D, it has better IQ and that is the name of the game for weddings.

The 5D-II may be half the price of the 5D, but it will cost you more by virtue of consuming disk storage space much more rapidly (for the higher pixel count and greater number of bits per pixel being stored) and for consuming CF/SD memory much more rapidly, and I am sure that they'll figure out other ways to up the cost-per-shot, just like they upped the iPOD cost for usage while cutting the purchase price!

That may be true, but with the 40D Canon have established some new factors to put into that equation. They have created sRAW. Let's say for the sake of argument that the 5DII uses some variation of the IDs MkII sensor that's 16.7Mb. I don't know what the size of sRAW is, but if it were a quarter to half the size of the RAW file you'd have the option whenever you wanted of shooting sRAW files at 4.2 to 8.3Mb each. That'd give you the best of both worlds and IMO would definitely be worth a look.

I own and use both the 40d and 5d also I shoot weddings.

I prefer the 5D to the 40D. When the 5D mk2 comes out I would like to get one 6-8 monthss after release (in case there are any problems, best to avoid the bleeding edge). To have 2 full frame cameras would be ideal for me.

It really depends on your shooting style, some prefer the extra "reach" of the crop bodies or faster fps burst.

I prefer the 5D for the following reasons

- Fast wide angle: To get a 16-35 equivalent on a crop body you need a 10-22 3.5-4.5. Which is a lot slower than the straight 2.8

- Focal lengths make more sense: For me the 50 mm 1.4 (until I can afford the 1.2) is one of if not my favorite lenses. On the crop body it becomes equivalent to 80mm, which I don't prefer as much to the 50mm. To have an equivalent focal length on a crop body you would need the sigma 30mm which is only usuable on crop bodies (a 35mm 1.4 would get you close but that is a very expensive alternative). Also the 70-200mm lens becomes 112-320, at a wedding I feel for my style it's a little too long.

- Low light performance / image quality.

my 2 cents.

My earlier reply was more an offhanded critical commentary on the iPod than about the long anticipated successor to the 5D!
