Is there a zoom that will go to 200 or 300 that will not exceed a total of 6 inches at it's longest length? I'm limited to a 6 inch maximum length when I go to a Jacksonville Jaguar football game. I'm sure all the stadiums have a similar rule. I take my Sigma 24-70 2.8 and they always question the length. I've started keeping a ruler in my bag. I have a 70-200 F4 and a 100-300 which are to long. The canon 55-250 IS says it is only 4.3 maximum length but I'm not sure if I believe it. I need to go to a camera store and check it out. Anyone know of one? I might start taking my daughters S3 which zooms to 400 or so but doesn't have the abilities of my 40D.

My 55-250 measures 4.5 - 4.75 inches collapsed (6.25 extended) on my XSi. The whole setup is 7 inches (not extended). It's close.

Maybe check out the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM. Kind of expensive, but, should fit the bill for size.

Sigma 18-200 OS is pretty short, but may be too slow. How about a prime and a 1.4x TC?

I second the 70-300 DO, extends a bit but pretty damn nice.

I guess the best way is to go to Ritz and see what will work. I don't want to buy something that's to long.
You can't use an extender if it puts the lens over 6 inches.
Thanks

Once you are in the stadium, you should be fine with the extender. They check at the door and once past, you are golden. We have similar rules, but they are never enforced once inside the premises, at least here.

Perhaps under these restrictive conditions, the best bet is just to bring in a decent point & shoot camera with 10x optical zoom...I believe Canon makes one of those too with IS built in. 6.0mm - 60mm (36mm - 360mm equivalent) !!

Otherwise the Canon ef 200mm f/2.8 II L is about your best bet for size and IQ.

Cheers! :)

I have had the ushers ask to see my lens a couple times after I'm in the stadium. It's the Sigma 24-70 2.8 with a lens hood and it does look kinda large. But it isn't quite 6 inches. A dollar bill measures right at 6 inches and that is what they use to measure. But now I keep a ruler in my bag. They seem to be watching a little closer this year. Last year I managed to sneak in my 100-300 without much problems. A lot depends on the guy at the gate and how observant he is. Last week there was a guy who got in some trouble because an usher questioned him about his lens and it was over 6 inches. They said they'd get back with him. His daughter and mine are cheerleaders. I just don't want to cause any problems. I thought if I could find a small zoom it would solve my problem. I took my Sigma and my 100mm macro tonight. I haven't look at the results yet.
