Do you aim anywhere in this picture when getting the sample to set the white balance, or do you aim at some white or gray card?
If the latter, you have understood that it's vital the illumination of the card is the same as of the subject?

The custom one looks better to me. First is just too cool. I tested the pic out in Lightroom and WB didn't change much when I click the white fence.

Yes, I have been using a gray card.
Well, perhaps it is what it is. I'll just keep tweaking the settings to suit my needs.
I appreciate all the replies.

Try taking a picture where you use something you think should be white, that's actually inside the frame, for reference. Don't use any external gray card. Sometimes they aren't neutrally gray, so they can cause a tint on the image, if you use them as a reference.

The first one is too cool. What color do you think sunlight is?

Agreed.
For the shot taken at 2 PM on a bright, sunny day, the second one looks more natural.

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

Can you post the images that you are using to set your white balance?

Sorry, they're gone during all of my testing but I have been using a gray card in the center of the image.

What gray card are you using? I've had issues with getting a solid WB, and I finally switched away from the card I had been using to set my WB. Since then, I've had no problems.

It's an older Kodak gray card

Don't know if the OP answered this. Is the white/gray card you're shooting to set the custom WB lit by the light source hitting the subject? If you're taking a picture of the white/gray card in the shade while the house is in sunlight then the custom WB will be off.

Having said that neither of your images look that off for late afternoon/early evening shots.

That could be your problem. Old cards made for film use were never intended to be used for WB, only exposure, and were not held to a accurately neutral standard. Moreover, if it's old the color might have shifted.
