Yesterday, I found out that my 580ex II was a dud and needed to be sent off to Canon in NJ. I sent off my flash in its case, with the foot stand in the case, wrapped in the bubble wrap in the Canon box. I also included the batteries that I use in the flash.

Now thinking back, I'm thinking that sending them anything except for the flash may have been a mistake. Has anyone sent off stuff to Canon in all the original packaging and received it back the same way?

Whenever I take my things to Jamesburg, the lady at the front desk inventories everything that I give her. Hopefully they'll do the same thing when they receive something in the mail.

When I sent some stuff back they asked specifically just for the defective item and not for the accessories. I think thats because they have to make an inventory of all the items you send to them. You should be getting a receipt notice and an inventory list of all items you sent soon. I wouldn't sweat it.

Good to know. Thanks Leo and Robert.

I just realized that I messed up again. I didn't realize that Canon has an online service site that you register the repair on. Since the tech on the phone gave me all the details on where to send it, I just sent it in without a printout of repair ticket. Hopefully I will be able to call them on Monday or Tuesday, see if they got it, and get everything connected together.

Most big companies have a record of every call entered into the data base. Customer name and address is part of the required information (at least it is a FUJI) You should not have any issues with no reference number. It does make it easier for Canon though;)

I would send the service dept an e-mail telling them what you sent. This will act as a notofication when/if something does not come back.
