Probably a common question.

I've had fun with my 18-55MM kit lens on my Rebel XT. I am looking for a new lens.

There's really not one specific thing I like to shoot, I like to shoot just about everything, so I am looking for a generic lens I guess. I mainly shoot outdoors, but would also like a decent indoor shot. I was going to get the nifty fifty, but I really want something else. I'd like to stick less then $200.

Any recommendations?

at that price range the 50 1.8 is your only option for what you want

Well, for starters, it would help if you had an idea of what your current lens isn't giving you. Recommendations will likely be different if you're looking to replace your current lens, versus add a new lens to your kit.

I would start with the 50 f/1.8 for it will allow you to see just how much more capable a very nice prime lens is, force you to "foot-zoom" your compositions and just be a joy to work with!

Why do you want "something else?"

I would encourage you to visit the lens archives here, and do some reading of the 100's of threads that address this topic.

With what you have given us to go on, there's not much we can offer you.

Perhaps I will look into the 50mm 1.8 then.

Local store has it for $109.99.

For everyday shooting versatility, I like to use the little 28-135. I have no idea what the price is.. but for every day stuff, it's worth it's weight in gold. It's got a decent little macro on it. (can't find my bee photos.. so I'll post the rose)

Unfortunately for under $200 you don't really have many options. For indoors/low light you will probably want something with a fast aperture, so you could get the 50mm F/1.8 like you've stated. What are you looking to achieve with a new lens that your 18-55 isn't giving you?

Canon lenses under $200 (none get very good reviews other than the 50mm):
50mm F/1.8
28-90 F/4-5.6
75-300 F/4-5.6
28mm F/2.8
55-200 F/4-5.6

Canon lenses over $200 but under $300 (you could stretch your budget, or buy used maybe):
28-105 F/4-5.6
35mm F/2
50mm F/2.5 Compact Macro
55-250 F/4-5.6 IS
100-300 F/4-5.6
135 F/2.8 soft focus
24mm F/2.8

As you can see there are quite a few Canon lenses close to your budget, and I didn't delve into the third party offerings. Your question is really to wide/vague without knowing what you want to shoot, or what you want to achieve.

Thanks for the info. Perhaps I can spend a bit more, not a big deal to me. Just want to get quality sharp shots. I feel like my 18-55 just isn't giving me that good "pop" color that I am looking for.

Canon EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS...I might have to look into that lens!

Nice things have been said about the 55-250. It is just a tad more than $200.

What would be the major difference between the 18-55, versus the 18-55 IS?

This is more likely to be due to your camera settings or post-processing than the lens. Boost your saturation and see what happens.
