I got to fly into Neets Bay with my brother in law yesterday. Got tons of pictures of bears and some shots from the plane, some of the shots even turned out ok. The windows were very dirty so the plane shots are just OK. Shooting the black bears against the white rushing water in evening light was a challenge too. But I am happy with the results (for the most part, considering my ability level).

On the way there

This bear in particular was after the roe. Thats about all he ate after he caught the fish.

He even tried to keep the roe from escaping down stream as he ate it.

If you have never been fishing for salmon you have to understand how strong they are and too see these bears just grab them and hold onto them like nothing is truly amazing!

This guy had three or four fish he was eating on at once. Mostly he would just eat the brains. Not to be gross, but he would bite off the top of the fish heads and mostly leave the rest of the fish alone.

This bear used one of his front feet to help hold the fish still till he could control it.

This bear was just sitting and enjoying the moment with his catch. He was smaller and had a much nicer coat then the rest. He seemed a little intimidated by the old bigger bears.

Da plane, Da plane.... coming to take us back home.

CC welcome as always, shot with my 100-400 and my 24-105. My site has over 200 shots of bears from this short evening trip, so beware if you go to look, you might be tied up a while.... lol

Thanks for looking....

Great series! You must have been excited to be that close to seeing their feeding routines. Thanks for sharing and fantastic camera work!

Who knew!?!?!? give them a prickly pear and they were good huh?...LOL...

As much as they get into garbage and eat at the dump I figured they would not be too picky. But from what I gather since it is late in the season they have gorged themselves to the point of being picky...

Cool shots

Thank you!

Everyone says they are nice shots, but when people who know what good shots are tell you they are good shots you feel much better, I truly appreciate the comments like this...

Out of curiosity I "searched" Ketchikan on here last night and saw you were just here. I think I even made a comment about looking me up next time too!

It was really nice getting that close. The bears were so interested in the fish they hardly even noticed us. In the past when I have encountered bears feeding on a stream it has been isolated and they run off before you can get a camera out for the most part. It was nice to be only limited by the plane coming to pick you back up...

Yup, you did. That's why I highlighted 'should'. If I had known you could get me that close to black-bears, I'd have dumped our karting excursion(which was a lot of fun). :)

In our 2 weeks in AK, I got a couple, OK, brown-bear shots, but this was my ONLY black bear encounter. In Ketchikan, through a dirty bus window and heavily cropped.

When there is an abundance of fish available, bears will often just eat the parts highest in fats and nutrients and leave the rest. They want to put on as much fat for winter as quickly as possible so they go for the high fat/
nutrient parts and leave the rest.

what fun pictures. I particularly like the bear who looks so relaxed and he's just hanging out with his fish and the plane picture. with that small wake behind the plane and the scenery... nice shot!

My BIL runs the native coorp. who owns that tour, one of their many tours. He is on the board of the fish hatchery co. who has the tour we went on to see these bears. He is the head of the tourism comm for that board. But anyone can go on that tours through Pro Mech Air out of Kethcikan.

Thank you so much!

The sheer number of bears in such a relaxing atmosphere was amazing, and I get to see alot of bears up here, but this was truly exceptional!
