YA! for about 4 miles. NECR (New England Central) in VT, the next to the last car jumped the rails about 4 miles north damaged a lot of ties including the timbers on a trestle bridge over the 3rd branch of the White River. This is going to cost them something, not only in repairs (they were working around the clock for 4+ days) but lost revenue on freight.

I don't know much about trains, so excuse me. But did that big piece of wood make the card tip over?

Don't know if they had know clue, I do know it was a good 4 miles before the hopper car tipped over. So they were dragging the trucks of the track and tearing up ties for that long.

Could be. the might have picked it up when they went over the driveway crossing with the wheels not on the rails.

I find it pretty funny. I just hope that no one was injured

So I guess the question is:

- Would this have happened with a caboose and humans at the back end keeping an eye on things.

- Would this have killed humans in a caboose at the back end who maybe couldn't have reacted in time to get the train stopped.

Bottom Line: Was this a FRED failure or a FRED success?

Hehehe....

F.R.E.D = "Flashing Rear End Device"

It's the automated brake integrity checking system that basically replaced the need for humans in a caboose.

I'm not sure now that the car still on the tracks was the last car. FREDs are pretty much required around here and I didn't see any on it. if they pulled more cars off from that one they would have had to have an engine on the end of that train or brought one down from pretty far up north of this area the train was heading south, the freights on this run can be pretty long.
