Are Canon's neck straps "whimpy"?

I have never like the neck straps that have come with any of my Canon cameras. I have owned the Elan7e film camera ,the 20D and now a 1DmkIIn. All of these straps have seemed very short in length and very little in the way of padding. I have used straps from Tramrac in the past as the provide a much more confortable feel for me. I'm just surprised that the do not offer a more robust strap even as a option.

I certainly agree. Got a new 40D, comes with the same strap as my Xt. I can no longer "stand" to have all this weight around my neck. I must extend the strap to full length, stick on arm and shoulder through, and put the strap on the opposite shoulder. This is only temporary, I'm going to HAVE to find something better.

IMO the Canon straps are way too wide. So I guess it's a matter of taste.
I use a lense strap now. About 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide I guess.

I don't ever carry a camera on my neck, always the right shoulder.

There are quite a few threads about neckstraps on POTN....

If you want a wider, sort of padded strap, have a look here: POTN strap (external link).

I actually had one of those when they first came out. I found that strap to be way too short as well. When I carry the camera on my shoulder I want the camera to rest at about my waist. I find that to be about the right length for me. The POTN strap left the camera at chest heigth. Very uncomfortable for me.

Yeah. I used to put the camera around the neck, but it was just really heavy. For some reason switching to the shoulder makes it a lot easier to walk around. My Tamrac strap is nice and comfy though, with two little pouches to stick CF cards.

Oh for pete's sake... What would you rather have? A better OEM neckstrap or better features in the camera? With the number of aftermarket straps out there, the choices are limitless. Just get one...

I use a leather and rubber Canon Powershot strap on my 20D.
It's about as long as a standard Canon strap, only padded much better!

I never gave it any thought. The strap that comes with the 40D works just fine for me, perhaps a little wider than I would like.

Congrats on the perfect title ;).

As mentioned, ton's of threads on this. I use Op/Tech straps as I find them to be the most comfortable. Have the neck strap attached to the Canon hand strap on my 40D.

The ideal solution is to have your own personal caddy follow you around and carry your camera and other equipment. When you want to take a shot, just call for what you want and he hands it to you. :D

I was pegged with that a while back. I feel I have to live up to it every now and then...

Unfortunately, she shoots a lot herself, so the only time I have a caddy is when she doesn't take her own stuff...

Me too--Oh Well--Just wishful thinking!;)

I'm thinking something heavy that she won't "borrow"--like a 300 or 400 2.8
