I was bored, so fair warning: purists & blur haters had better get out the Excedrin!

I spent too long saving my place & waiting for it to get dark & the McDonalds to turn their lights in, which was at 8:24, so I played with some filters. Twenty minutes later, they closed Woodward, so I didn't have as much time as I thought I had.

1. I wish his smile was just a bit easier to see!

2. There were a few people there. (Just practicing my powers of understatement!)

Was the blurry look on purpose? I take it it was. Can you explain why though?

I have plenty of sharp shots from earlier in the days & earlier in the week. What I wanted was more of a feeling of motion as it got dark & the lights came on at the backgrounds I wanted to use at Duggan's & the McDonalds.
I admitted that I got bored as time went on & got a bit carried away especially in this thread. I haven't seen a rule yet about just having fun & experimenting? ;)

Did you look at the earlier threads? There are some sharper shots there. See what you think conveys motion better.

looks like you need to shoot earlier in the day so they don't look like you are drinking too much ;)

ROFL Frank.

I can't tell you how many stickies you would put up if someone posted those shots. You crack me up.

Exif Data

# Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 1/15 second = 0.06667 second
# Lens F-Number/F-Stop = 25/10 = F2.5
# Exposure Program = manual control (1)
# ISO Speed Ratings = 100
# Original Date/Time = 2008:08:16 08:37:58
# Digitization Date/Time = 2008:08:16 08:37:58
# Shutter Speed Value (APEX) = 256042/65536
Shutter Speed (Exposure Time) = 1/15 second
# Aperture Value (APEX) = 173268/65536
Aperture = F2.5

For a good starting point, first set the f-stop & shutter speed you need. Then adjust the ISO.
Need an exposure crutch?

;)

I could make one on Rad's suggestion. "Appropriate shutter speeds for sharp subjects vs number of drinks over time"? Maybe the results would be more credible if we had an Aussie do it though. More than two drinks & I wouldn't be able to translate my notes after. :D

Great post, kona77! Nice to know that someone actually listens! My goal is to have you guys take over so I can sleep in an extra hour!

I like the look of the last three pics.

I especially appreciate comments from someone with obvious excellent taste!
Actually, it's not something to (over)do, but makes a nice tool to carry in your kit. The trick is to keep the focus point locked on the part of the image that you hope to keep sharp. Sometimes it works.

As you can see from the Wednesday "Warming Up" thread linked above, I could have had sharper images at 1/30 sec & still had some motion in them. I used 1/15 to push the limits a bit but it looks like I was getting shaky & these came out more like the 1/8 sec tests.
Win some, lose some, & I've violated the first rule of the working pro: "Don't show anyone your crappy almost Images"! :D

But this is supposed to be a learning forum too, isn't it? So I'll show my miStAks along with everyone else.

More on star filters & promoting controlled flare in your "Arty" shots: It started here...
Need star effect filter opinion

SYS picked up the ball & carried it here:
Star filters: DIY - Filters for Lee, HiTech, Cokin, and Other Filter Holders

Other ways to promote flare: try either, or a combination, of these:
1. Take off your hood, &/or...
2. Put on a filter, &/or....
3. Put on a filter, & rub your finger across your forehead or along your nose, & then rub it on the filter around the outside edge. (Sometimes called a "Grease Job").
4. For more extreme blur & more on the "Grease Job":
https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1418715

Try different f-stops & use the DOF (Depth of Field) preview to try to get an idea of the effect. Sometimes you will get some effect but not be able to see it until you get the image in your computer, so shoot, & take notes until you have a feeling for what you will get.

Good for you though for playing around with the camera you never know what you'll find.
