Alternative flash for the 40D

Hello,
first of all Great site!

I'm looking for a alternative flash for my 40D. I do have a 580ex , but I was look for a cheaper after market flash that might come close. as a backup and slave.

The Sigma 530 Super sounds like what you are looking for.

If you want a flash that will reliably work as an E-TTL slave to the 580EX, then the 430EX II is your best priced option.

I like the Sigma EF-530 DG Super, and it will work well as a manually controlled optical slave, but I would not recommend it as an E-TTL slave.

The Vivitar 285HV and Sunpak 383 are also very popular.

They are popular among the Strobist crowd for manually conrolled off-camera flash and can be connected to optical slave sensors, but since they aren't E-TTL compatible, I wouldn't recommend one as a backup for a 580EX.

Oh sorry, I didn't see the bit about needing ETTL.

I think that the 430ex is a great choice. It is substantially cheaper than the 580ex but still delivers good performance especially as a back-up or secondary fill flash in a strobist set-up.
