Hi everyone!

Just discovered this forum today and have been reading and learning lots :)

I'm looking to purchase my first dslr camera in the next few weeks and would like your advice. I'm considering the Canon Rebel XTi...I really don't know much about cameras or Canon's product line, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

WELCOME TO POTN!!!!! Can you give us an idea on what you'll be using the camera for and how much you'd like to spend. Have you looked at the new XTs yet?

I want my first camera to be just for experimenting and getting into photography as a hobby.

Generally, I want to photograph people more than anything else. I might photograph some special events for friends such as weddings, parties, etc. (in addition to their professional photographers ;)). I'll probably help some of my car-enthusiast friends take pictures of their cars as well!

In terms of budget, I'm trying not to spend TOO much on a beginner camera (new or used). Thanks!

A Nikon D80 would suit you perfectly.

Pair that XT up with a "nifty fifty" and you will have a great starter rig for relatively cheap:

Also, consider looking for used older models as a way to get better equipment for good prices too (I would have done this had my first body not been a gift). I wouldn't go to eBay per se...but there might be someone in your area that you can meet up with in person to trial their for-sale gear. (POTN has a used gear section as well)

I would suggest getting used 30D as a starter. It will give you some pro features and won't beat your wallet up too badly.
Look on the selling forum here.

Both the XS and the XSi are great cameras. You will probably get more use out of the XSi, as, aside from build quality (its not "cheap", it just doesnt have a metal frame), it really is a full featured DSLR. There aren't alot of photos out there to be taken that you won't capture with that camera.

A great site for learning about Canon equipment:

the-digital-picture.com

Good luck, and welcome to the forums.....
