Absolutely - better, cheaper, more effective. Do a quick search on this and you will find several dozen threads on this. It gets a lot of discussion.

The LS does work well under a limited number of conditions. People have gotten very effective results with it and have been quite happy in that regard. But compared to the alternatives it is quite bulky and expensive.

Other very effective alternatives are:
1. Index card - very cheap, easy to make, been in use for 40+ years.
2. Lumiquest products - excellent, fold flat, variants, relatively cheap, fold flat
3. Demb flip it - many use it here, quite effective relatively inexpensive.

Here are a few threads that may interest you:

The Stofen is inexpensive and very compact. It works very well as long as you are in a confined area where it can bounce of nearby walls and ceilings. This is also quite popular here.

A lot of people also use it outdoors (incrorrectly?) and I'm not quite sure why. There is nothing for it to bounce off, and it only reduces your flash output.

I've used the Gary Fong Lightsphere for a couple of years now and its performed as advertised. I've used it for portraits....family gatherings, etc. No complaints. I like it way better than the Sto-Fen, much better coverage and light dispersal. Its sole use isn't to "bounce" the flash.......when used outside it does a great job of dispersing the light as well.

I plan to upgrade to the "Whale-Tail" in the near future. I love to use it on multiple slave units.....

Sometimes you actually get what you pay for. Good luck.

I actually own a LightSphere - the original I think. I don't use it. As mentioned, it works in a very narrow set of conditions - mostly where you don't really need it.

The options are to experiment with bounced flash indoors. It requires no attachment to your flash unit. Other than that check out www.abetterbouncecard.com (external link)

Outdoors I shoot straight on and adjust with FEC.

I two own the lightsphere. Mine mostly gets used when I need to throw some bare bulb in somewhere off a stand. Never sees a mount on my on camera flash anymore.

Great minds think alike Dave :D. Works like a charm so long as you have an accurate ambient exposure.

I use my lightsphere on faces that aren't sweaty. It produces a really unpleasant specular issue with moist skin compared to an umbrella or soft box.

I've been considering lumiquest promax system.
