softbox vs. LS...slight of mouth or slight of hand...three card Monte...all similar practices of the art of misdirection

So what are you saying?

the so-called 'comparisons' are biased...very similar to how Democrats portray Republicans, and Republicans portray Democrats. You cannot believe everything they say about their competition at face value!

Until someone does a real test of these things side by side unbiased, we are left with nothing but speculations.

We do provide conclusions of personal evaluations on POTN, and we call the kettle black when it is. That is why we refer to 'Tupperware' light modifiers. Yes, they do have some value, but the value is generally overblown.

Quite. What more do you want? People pay for these things thinking' they're great then hate them. So it seemed they must have thought they were worth it somehow. I'm sorry, but there are unbiased tests and price is overblown. I'm right there with Wilt.

The fact is that under limited circumstances the LS does work, but that it sucks up a significant amount of light because it throws it in all directions. Many people have shown that on this forum over the past couple of years.

It will give pleasing results if used within certain limited parameters. But... you can also get the same if not better results with cheaper materials, purchased, or even homemade. And many here have demonstrated that also.

It all boils down to understanding exposure, how to modify your light, and how to set your camera to take advantage of it. Another word for this is experience. ;)

Here are a few old threads that talk about diffusers in general, and a few posts that discuss the LS in particular:

Why use a lightsphere that throws light all around the room when you are shooting straight ahead? Why throw your light backwards when your subject is in front of you..total waste of light and batteries.

Being a total newbie I watched the videos and read about diffusers and thought the LS was the best. But being a geek I ordered the knock off from GI - saves plenty dollar.

Since getting the LS it's been left on my flash all the time. But I've been reading these threads and decided to do some tests. I now know abit more about my camera and how to use it. When I got the LS I only had a 420EX and a 300D - so I couldnt dial in any flash compensation or anything. But now I have a 40D and the 420ex becomes useful!

So anyway I did some tests.... Lets just say I wont bother with the LS anymore :)

It makes a difference for sure - and when you dont know why you think it's good. When you figure out light a bit more you realise whats going on.

Glad I bought the cheap knockoff :D

I might stick up the tripod and do some controlled tests so people on here can really see whats going on.

Thanks for independently confirming the facts we state about the lighting modifiers as not being biased, but impartial and objective and based upon sound lighting principles.
