The woman and I are getting married soon and she needs a passport photo for our trip. She wants me to take the photo .

I take pictures outside and of cars, never of a person/indoors.

I have a 35mm L prime now that I figure would be best to use.

I also have a 580ex 11 flash now also, but I bought it used and it came with no instructions so I don't really know how to use it lol.

This is what i'm thinking..

I have a room with a real light green wall. I figure this would be a good backgound.

I will set my camera on a tripod and use the 35mm lens getting as close as I can to her.

I will bounce my flash off the white ceiling. I am not real sure how to do this. It sounds easy enough, but I would think that the different position of the bounce would cause different shadows. Maybe a diffuser would help?

I have a ceiling fan with some bright spotlight like lights that can be adjusted (I don't know if these would be good or bad), and I have light from a window across the room. I was thinking I could use the "spot light in the ceiling to help light the background maybe.

Anyway, Any advise would be great! If there is something I should go buy that would really help with this one shot, I will get it.

Thanks for looking and any help or advise :) .

Passport photos are like $10 at CVS .
Then you don't have to worry about the requirements.

If you screw up the photo in any way, or she is not EXACTLY in the right spot in the picture they will send it all back, risky business...

That was a great link Rene! Its so funny looking through there, then looking at my passport photo. I have a bad shadow on the right side of my face lol. It was done at the post office.

I played with a bear as a model haha.

I have done this 2-3 times and I have to tell you that its not worth it. They (INS, or whatever they're called now) are very very picky about the photograph, quality/color don't seem to matter but the paper, position and dimensions have to 100% on the spot or they will be rejected.

I've done it a couple times and I've never had any problems. They give you the size requirements on the site, also on the application I think. Just take the photo against a neutral background.

Too many little details here to bother yourself with considering you could have had the photo done already and the passport packet sent off.

Way to much thought and time for a photo that's going to sit around closed up in a little blue book.

Just my $0.02

OK, I understand it is alot of effort for just one photo and I could get it done cheap.

My reason for making this thread was to get some tips from you who have done this along time. I see (except for the good link) I am not going to get this.

It is not just the fact that it is one picture, it is something that my woman wanted me to do, and it is good practice for me, and it is a challenge, and it is just fun.

*This was not to be harsh if it reads that way*

I don't understand the "a lot of effort" thing. I Don't think it could have taken more than 10 minutes.

...

It's seriously not that hard. My mom used her Kodak EasyShare, stood about three feet from the camera, and fired off a series of shots. I believe it's a 2-by-2 inch photograph. She sent it to Walgreens for 19 cents and used the cutting board to make the photograph. It's as good as Walgreens; they use a point-and-shoot camera as well to do the passport photographs.

If they reject your application your application fee is gone and have to resubmit it.
