Hey guys I have a question regarding the Coking P system; I'm about to travel and primarly will be use with ND and GND filters and I have some questions.

I know it's not the best but I hardly use this kinda stuf but

Can you stack filters on the P system
Would it work with the 24-70 and 17-40 ?

Thanks in advance

I use the Cokin "P" system for my grey grads. Yes, it works well on my 24-70L, with its 77mm filter size, on both my 30D (crop body) and Eos-3 (35mm film body).

I don't know what size filter thread you've got on the 17-40 and the wider angle at 17mm might be an issue, you'd need to try one to find out.

The standard "P" series holder will stack three rectangular filters. Although I often end up just hand-holding the filter in front of the lens.

You will get vignetting on the wide on FF I cut the holder down to only hold one filter as the shops did not have the wide holder available. The wide holder does the cutting for you I think. I cannot remember how wide I had to go before it showed but it was probably not just at the extreme end or I would not likely have cut the holder for that only.

I have the 17-40 as well so that was the lens that gave me problems.

Cokin has 2 types of "P" filter holders; a standard one that can take 3 filters + a CPL, and a slim model that can only take a single filter. The slim one is designed to eliminate/reduce vignetting on wide angle lenses.

I'd go with the 'Z' system, since that's what needed for FF's. I have the Z system, and I get a slight issue at 17mm on the 17-40L, but every other lens, is just fine.

I'd second this. The Z system will be a better choice for full frame with wider lenses like the 17-40. There are even larger options but the Z should cover you in most cases.

The P size will vignette unless you cut down the holder, but in doing so, you lose the ability to stack filters unless you handhold. The Z holder will vignette on the 5D/17-40L combo (I had one, sold it for this reason). I switched the holder to the Lee brand...no vignetting on the 5D/17-40L, even with all three filter slots in place (however, you will need the Lee 77mm wide angle adapter ring). For the money (holder is $15 more than the Z-Pro), you'd be better off with the Lee, and you won't have the constraints of the P-system. For the 5D, I'd definitely recommend the larger sized holder, first choice Lee, then Z-Pro.

Yeah I may have to switch to the Lee holder down the road. After having tried both I noticed the Lee might vignette less but I wasn't sure for certain because I hadn't spent much time with it.
