Hey guys,

I took this picture over the weekend at a bonfire. Don't mind the focus and IQ of the picture. I was just snapping away in TV mode testing out the 50mm 1.8 at night. The 50mm has been performing flawlessly in very good light or very dim light conditions but some of pictures of the fire I took came out weird with these "reflections" above the object of focus (or lack there of). Do you guys know what causes this? Could it be a reflection of the fire on my hoya uv lens and its getting captured? I was probably about 3-4 feet away from the bonfire. Thanks.

Call Ghost Hunters!!!!

Actually, it appears to be some light hitting the smoke and causing a haze-like reflection.

Doesn't appear to be anything unusual. My vote is also some light hitting the smoke.

Sort of the same thing you get if you are shooting fireworks and you are right on top of the action. Lots of smoke hitting the light against a dark background. A hazy-like look.

Where there's fire, there's smoke?

That's definitely lens flare - internal reflections of the (very bright) fire reflecting off the front element of the lens back onto the sensor. The greenish hue is typical of this phenomenon. Since you had a filter on the lens, the reflections are more likely due to this.

Note that if it is not caused by the filter, this does not mean that your lens is defective.
