but no one is mentioning that theMkIII is just two months short of 18 months replacement cycle

Probably because the 1D bodies are on a much longer replacement cycle than that, John.

Outside the original 1D, the 1D series cameras have also been on approximately an 18 month schedule as well.
1D = 12/01
1DMkII = 4/04
1DMkIIn = 10/05, 18 months from the MkII
1DMkIII = 5/07, 19 months from the MkIIn
1DMkIIIn = ??? (11/08 would be 18 months)

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

If I were a betting man, I would guess that the next 1 series body will be a re-release of the 1D mkIIn

Hi John,

Mk II to Mk IIn wasn't really a "new" model introduction though.

Apart from that "blip" it's been (according to DPR (external link)):

1D - 09/01
1D Mk II - 1/04 (with the Mk IIn at 08/05)
1D Mk III - 02/07.

For the "S" bodies it's:

1Ds - 9/02
1Ds Mk II - 09/04
1Ds Mk III - 08/07.

But yeah, following the same logic, a MK IIIn could come out sooner rather than later...

I am not so sure we can predict release scehdules on past performance with any real accuracy.

Market forces, development schedules, technology advances and just plain old financial requiremetns dictate company releases.

Clearly that is true, but it's alwaus fun to read the tea leaves and intuit the future. :)

If you want to read a real headline, imagine this one in PopPhoto, November 2008.

"Canon shows up at Photokina, brings nothing new."
:shock:

HAH!

Of course for many of us if all they do is a new Rebel and some consumer ultrazooms it basically is nothing new.

HAHAHAHA, I can't disagree with that - I mean I check every one of these rumor posts on numerous sites, just hoping to catch a bite of the new cameras - but then that is cos I have money burning a hole in my pocket and a wife desperately wanting me to get a new camera so she can get her "beloved" 5d back :-))

I am as sick as the rest of you.....

If that happens. I am going to consider jumping ship to Nikon. Or maybe not. But It will run across my mind.

The 1D Mark III will remain in Canon's existing line-up till Winter 2009, after which its successor will be announced prior to PMA 2010 and available for sale beginning Spring '10.

What Canon is going to sell to us post-Photokina 2008 is a successor to the EOS 5D - combining the best of the 5D and Mark III plus new technologies in the EOS System, a full frame DSLR for nature, portrait, weddings, sports and news photographers in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the EOS-3 film SLR.

That EOS-3 formed the basis of what's acceptable to the working pro photogs, and most of its features were made available in the EOS-1v pro camera - which is the base model the EOS-1D-series of DSLRs were based and improved upon.

Whatever new tech Canon is putting into the 5D's successor will eventually find its way into the 1D Mark III's successor comes Spring '10.

Umm. Your sources? You can't drop a bomb like that without some inside news. I would be upset if I didn't see a new 1D. I will buy one this winter regardless though.
