Well, the market works like this: if enough people jump ship to nikon, canon will have problems in their slr-division, then they'll stop making slr's beacause it is a losing thing.. and then YOU have to jump ship too!

OH NOES!

I don't know if it has anything to do with a 1D IIIN being readied for release, but my usual supplier (warehouse express in the UK) is currently listing the 1D III as "Canon supply problem - currently unavailable - place on backorder". I spotted that a couple of days ago and my first thought was that they could be about to anounce the 'N' version at Photokina.

Presumably, they would have switched the production of regular 1D IIIs over to IIINs some time back, ready to have a good supply once announced.

I don't think there will be any 1DIIIN for this year or next's.

As Canon USA's Chuck Westfall had said it a few months back, Canon chose the 1.3x crop factor as the competitions then all used the 1.5x (or 2x) version. And full-frame was exclusive to Canon until Nikon unveiled its FX-format models.

An N model is basically upgrading a few features over the standard version. As it stands now, the 1D III only lose out to the Nikon D3 on high ISO noise of 3200/6400, 12.1MP and full frame.

It bested the D3 on AF perfomance, colour, exposure and WB control. It doesn't lose much ground in terms of image buffer over the recently-announced buffer upgrade service by Nikon for the D3.

AF performance is subjective - in terms of accuracy, the 1D III has more keepers than the D3 from my own tests but the latter is better than the former in subjects that change direction within the frame. However, I found it funny that the D3's 3D Dynamic AF could not differentiate the main subject from other moving subjects - a stage singer the camera was tracking, and suddenly the main AF tracking point changed to one of the back-up dancers, which was moving faster.

With firmware 1.2.3 installed, I find the 1D III writes faster than the D3 on a SanDisk Ext III 8GB and 16GB CF cards. And with the Extreme Ducati 8GB, the write speed is even faster but have not make a comparison yet with the D3 on this.

An N version (if any) of the 1D III would only offer several performance upgrades, it can't update it from a 1.3x camera to a full-frame or increasing the 10.1MP to 13-15MP, all of which are better off being offered to the photographers via a new camera model than merely an upgrade variation.

The point is, most don't jump, they just **** about it.

I jumped from Nikon to Canon, but prior to doing so I didn't take every last opportunity presented to me to declare my intention to switch: when I finally established that the D200 wasn't up to the job, I got a Canon 30D and got on with my life.

There has been a sighting on another rumor forum of a prototype 1D4

QUOTED IMAGE

Unfortunately the photo was taken with a 1D3 when the new camera was coming right at it in bright sun on a warm day.

That must have been taken using one of the blue dot mkIIIs with the latest firmware - focus is dead ON!

Continuing with the personal attack remarks will only result in one of us locking the thread. So if you want to keep the discussion as it was started I suggest we start now.

Good observations....but when the MKIIn was released it was simply for a small handful of updates...the most user visible one being a slightly larger LCD.

Considering the Nikon LCD runs circles around the Canon one, it makes more sense to me that Canon does release an MKIIIn sooner instead of later that would include the LCD imprvement some twekas in WB & software as well as a unnanounced change in the AF system ;)

Looks like we got the LCD improvement, courtesy of the 50D.

I think with the release of the new processor, we probably will be seeing a brand new 1D, not an update.

But that's just me.:)

That's what I think too. 50D already has almost as much features as the current 1DmkIII and tops it in certain areas. Plus, that would, hopefully, put all the AF trouble associated with their 1D model to rest.

I myself am waiting for its replacement. My 40D does its job and I'm looking for weather sealing and better AF. 50D is nice but I'm at where I want to get the benefit of a 1D. If it takes another 6 months so be it. That won't stop me taking pics in the meantime.
