Last Saturday I was given the opportunity to assist and second shoot at a wedding. It was my first "professional" engagement, although an unpaid position on this occasion. I've only shot at one wedding before, almost two years ago, and that was a guest with a camera. The results then needed a lot of work to make them useable. On this occasion I hope I did rather better.

I shot 930 images and after culling I have sent 410 to the pro. Here are a few shots from the day. Comments welcome.

EDIT : After further refinement I'm down to 243 photos. As I've updated the online album the links I did have here no longer work, so I've had to edit the links and these represent some of the fnal proof edits for submission. I've done my best to insert the same photos but, relying on memory, I may have the wrong versions here, or completely different photographs, so the comments further below may not apply.

If all goes well I've got another position as assistant/2nd shooter, with Sam, this coming Friday and again the following Friday so any independent feedback would be welcome. Here are the rest of the shots....

You got some great details. I'd be happy to get images like these from a second shooter. In fact, some of them demonstrate exactly what I'm looking for from my second: details shots, "moments" of emotion, connection, etc.

And you have a nice variety of shots - groups, the couple, particular guests, details, etc.

Not much specific critique to offer. My only suggestions would be maybe a little more selective focus/shallower DOF on the shoes would have made them look more elegant, and in the shot of the couple kissing, their faces look a overly red - maybe that's their skin tone (and my work monitor is not calibrated, so who knows...) And a slight nitpick - I would have preferred to see the whole bouquet in the flower girl picture, instead of having the very edge cropped out.

Overall, a very nice set.

Scott

edited to add: just had a quick look at the rest of the gallery - some very nice shots in there as well - great portraits of the cute kids, and some very nice candid portraits as well.

Thanks, Scott. To be honest I was given pretty much complete freedom on what to shoot and how to shoot for most of the time, so I just sort of guessed what might make a worthwhile contribution.

The shot of the shoes was just a grabbed opportunity. They actually have grass stains on the toes, as they had been worn most of the day already. I saw them lying in a corner and just quickly set them on the floor and fired off a quick one. I was actually thinking a little more DOF would be better. As it is, I think the focus is a fraction too far back, missing the detail on the top of the shoes. Nice sharp strap though :)

As for the kissing couple, the shot is actually 100% unedited - no sharpening, nothing. I shot in raw on AWB and I think, for the environment, the colours reflect the ambient mood quite nicely. In fact, the shirt collar samples as RGB = 80.6% : 81.3% : 85.1% in Lightroom, so there is definitely some blue from the flash mixing in. EDIT : I think the suspect colour is because the shot is underexposed. Adding 1 stop to the exposure in Lightroom is maybe a little too much but it gets the flesh tones in a better ballpark.

I'm not too bothered about the missing edge of the bouquet but I take your point. This was another grab shot - she was walking past me and I had the camera in One-Shot Focus mode and I didn't want to stop her and pose her (I can't pose people for toffee) so I had to focus and fire super quick. I had no time to refine my composition. I think she makes a fabulous subject though, and I'm happy :)
