As an owner, Kelby's book is great. Also check out his "7 Point System" book for more great tips and an excellent base workflow to follow.

I ordered these from Amazon today, as they both came highly recommended for portrait folks:

"Adobe Photoshop Restoration & Retouching (3rd Edition) (Voices That Matter)"

Katrin Eismann

"Photoshop Masking & Compositing (VOICES)"
Katrin Eismann

are these books recommended for those that are completely inexperienced?

i was reading the comments on amazon.com and some were saying that it was hard for those with little to no experience to follow this instructions.

I just bought the Scott Kelby book and although I love Scott's books, this one isn't a beginner book. He assumes you have knowledge of CS before you come into it and then he's pointing out the new features of CS version 3.

The Kelby book can be done by people with no experience, but it might take a little bit of messing about at times. You might like to get a photoshop basic concepts book, a "for dummies" style one to start you off.
