Tripod Mount Ring

Hi,

I was looking at the tripod ring for my 200mm f2.8 L lens and noticed that they are £90 on warehouseexpress.com

But you can get them on ebay for £12 inc p&P

Has anyone gone for the cheap route and brought one of the fakes on ebay.

£90 is a bit expensive for a tripod mount ring.

However, i dont want to buy something that will rust and break whilst on on the tripod and break my lens

i just bought a knock-off tripod ring for my 70-200L f4 IS for $17.20 delivered from china (ebay) and i got it in five days.

i've bought several of these in the past and this is one of the "good" ones so i am very pleased .

Personally I prefer to stick to the official Canon brand stuff...

I got a knock off one from Hong Kong via ebay and it's not failed me yet even hanging my 200mm f/2.8 L and a gripped 40D off my Wimberley Sidekick.

How flexible are these? Meaning, will they fit on on the lens apart from the ones they list? I have a Sigma 70-300 and there's a bit of lens creep (el-cheapo velbon tripod here) esp in portrait modes.

Anyway i can find out apart from comparing the diameters of the 2 lens, or purchasing the ring and seeing it if fits?

I bought a knock-off ring for my 100mm macro off eBay for a fraction of what Canon's cost. Funny thing though, I have never felt the need to use it. The lens seems to balance nicely without it.

I bought a cheapie on ebay as well for my 70-200 f4 IS
It fits great... no problems mounting it to a tripod or monopod...
my only gripe with is is that the line painted on the tripod that is supposed to line up with the line on the lens to show it's level (or very close to it) is not level at all... I did spend a few minutes with touch up paint and a level to correct it (and add a 2nd for when I change the camera's orientation)

i think i bought the same one, non is, got it in about 5 days and it works great.

only problem is it doesnt seem to hold to the lens tight when you tighten it down, meaning you can rotate it.

simple fix of adding more padding material around it and now it holds on tight.

its made portrait mode on a tripod so much easier and i feel more confident.

couldnt see spending $100 range for the same thing when this does just as good

Knock off also means counterfeit in England (have you seen those anti-piracy knock-off Nigel ads?) and as the one I bought has a Canon logo and was advertised as Canon despite clearly not being authentic, I'd say knock off fits quite well.

Also if you've watched any of those old "Confessions of a window cleaner" type movies then Knock off has yet another meaning in England


@ ajayclicks: The tolerance of the one I have is very tight, I think they'd be either too loose or tight enough to damage the lens when screwed down on any other lens but the Canons they're made for.

to "knock off" means to kill in a premeditated fashion (murder) in the colonies .

Mine is a knockoff and I am the second owner (bought it here) and it works as well for me as it did the for the original owner, perfectly!
