Why is Photoshop changing the contrast and hue on it's own?

When I use Photoshop to sharpen or convert RAW to jpeg, it will change the contrast and hue without me adjusting it, making the colors look washed out. The colors don't appear to change while I'm in editing in Photoshop. The color changes show up in the converted jpg file.

Canon DPP doesn't do that, it leaves the colors intact when I use it to sharpen or convert to a jpeg. I rather use Photoshop for sharpening because I think it sharpens better than Canon DPP. But I need to fix this problem first.

Is there a setting in Photoshop I need to change?

What are you using to view the jpg ?

Change your color space from Adobe RGB to sRgb using the blue link underneath the image in ACR.

Also, if these changes happen with any jpg file (not just Raws), you might want to read the link in my sig.
In that case my guess would be that you've probably set the wrong working space (something else then sRGB), and convert to that profile by default.

What the others are getting at but without actually telling you is that Photoshop is not doing it. What we think might be the cause is viewing an image edited in AdobeRGB in sRGB. If this is whats happening, then using sRGB should resolve the problem. All you need to do is run an experiment with a copy of one of the troublesome images.

Not that I've ever seen this myself, but I bow to those with more experience and am happy to accept that it might show.

I have the same problem when using CS2 vs. PS7. Both are in sRGB, but CS2 looses color and contrast when uploaded to the web for some reason.Hmmm....?

Show us a screenshot of the image side by side in photoshop and firefox. Also give us a link to the image on the net.

Well, I don't know what happened...but I did the FF3 update and both look great on the web now...Maybe it was the browser color management...? Would this make any sense?

FF 3 is color managed, when set up that way (IIRC it's not color managed by default)
FF2 is not color managed.
Safari is color managed, but is wrong with untagged images
IE5 on a Mac can be color managed.
Rest is not color managed.

I still say that if the resulting jpgs are different from PS7 and PSCS2, something is set different.

yes you guys were right. I set the color management to sRGB and now everything is ok
