Just wanted to share some candids from a BBQ last night. Most if not all are 50mm f/1.8 on my 40D which I just picked up Sunday. This was pretty much my first virgin shooting with any DSLR so I have much to learn. I've tried very hard to resist sharing more with you guys. C&C welcome and wanted. =)

#1 - ok, but not doing much for me.
#2 - OOF or motion blur
#3 - My favorite. Nice pose, composition, and the shot is nice and sharp.
#4 - Not very interesting
#5 - You needed a tad faster shutter speed
#6 and #7 - pictures of people eating are usually unflattering and this one is no exception.

Thanks for your comments! After a bit of reading around, seems I should've manually set the white balance (to avoid the yellowish tone), and probably crank up ISO a bit so I could get a bit more speed.

6 and 7 were meant to be a bit humorous. =)

I like the warm feel to the photos.

I agree that photos of people eating can be unflattering, but I also think that sometimes they can really work (I took a photo of my son when he was younger eating ribs and it's great! Oh, the mess!:D).

So, #6 doesn't do anything for me, but I think number 7 is funny.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks you all greatly. There were some even really messier wings eating pics but I'll save that for friends to enjoy.

Would simply setting White Balance to Tungsten mode compensate for the lighting, or should I have tried to fix it up a it post?

edit: did a bit of reading on white balance, and seems to make a bit more sense now thanks! =)

work on getting your shutter speed up. you can fix white balance issues later if you shoot in raw. I know you were going for the candid look, but try to remember to compose your shots carefully, which in addition with the energy that you have captured will give you excellent results.
