Hi
Does anyone know where i can read about the techniques used for printing of photograpgic images in early newspapers or books?
How did they get an image on a daguratype or photographic plate, etc onto the page?I remember reading something about this some time ago but have forgotten most of it.For some reason i recall that engravure was somehow connected with the first attempts of transfering photos but i'm probably confused because everything i can find on the subject now doesnt mention anything like that.
What i DO remember is some kind of technique involving a kind of mesh to transfer images but now can't find any info on this.
Any help is appreciated!

I suggest you look up "rotogravure" (too many references to list here). Very populare process in the early days involving an etched copper cylindical plate.

Prior to that, probably simply the gravure process for flat plates, although this was much more common for handbills than newspapers.

Hope this helps.

Obviously, these were done using half-tone images, which you should also look up.
