About time I dabbled again and tried to get better use of my flash. I have tungsten lights etc so have a collection of stands, brollies etc and am looking for a solution: My Metz 58 AF1 has a four (?) pin long connector socket but I have had no luck finding a sync cord that will plug in to it. I am looking for a decently long cable too that will plug in to the 5D or 1DmkIII. Any ideas?

Also, I need to get the flash on the stands with a brolly adapter, is something like this about right? http://www.amazon.co.uk …tails?ie=UTF8&me=&seller= (external link)

Cheers

:)

The Metz 58 AF-1 doesn't have a sync port you can plug a sync cable into. The only ports on it are the high voltage port for an external power pack and a USB port for downloading firmware upgrades. If you want to sync the 58 AF-1 off-camera, you'll need to get a hotshoe adapter to mount the flash onto.

You'll also have to make sure that the 58 AF-1 is at firmware level v2 or higher. Firmware v1 does not allow you to use the flash off-camera.

The 58AF1 is Canon wireless compatible, so the ST-E2 ought to be able to trigger the Metz 58AF1 remotely.

Yes, that's true, assuming the OP has an ST-E2 and wants to use it to trigger the flash instead of using a sync cable (which is what he was asking about in the first post).

No argument. I raised the ST-E2 topic merely because any other connection usage of the 58AF1 off camera is non-ETTL compatible, so I wanted to offer an ETTL compatible solution, since sometimes newbies ask one question without being aware of the implications of their question.

Can the 550EX or 580EX trigger the Metz? Or could another Metz?

Canon flash with wireless Master capability can trigger the Metz 58AF1. Or another Metz 58AF1 can trigger another 58AF1. But a Metz 54MZ (Metz wireless compatible) could not trigger Metz 58AF1 (Canon wireless compatible), because Metz wireless and Canon wireless are not compatible with each other.

My 550EX will trigger my Metz 58. Sensors have to be able to "see" each other.

Would the Metz (as master) trigger 220/230EX?

Would a Canon 580EX be able to trigger a 220/230EX ? The Metz 58AF1 is simply a thrid party surrogate flash that works wherever the Canon equivalent works.

Quick research on the web seems to indicate no wireless mode support in the 220EX, so the answer is 'NO'...for the 580EX or for the 58AF1 to work with the 220EX in ETTL mode. (The 220EX might be usable as a manual flash using optical triggering.)

Based on my testing, the Metz 58 AF-1 seems to be fully compatible with any Canon EX flash that can participate in the ETTL wireless remote configuration. It can serve as a master or a slave. However, it is better utilized as a master because it can control four groups whereas an EX master can only control three. With the 58 AF-1, the master is placed in its own group so that you have M, A, B and C as the groups instead of the usual A, B and C.

Ah, that all makes sense. So I need to get a hot shoe adapter. Err, how do you tell what the firmware is?

Cheers!

Doh, figured out the firmware, it tells you when it's turned on!

As a follow up to my original post and the Metz 58 AF1, can anyone tell me if there is a way to remotely work in TTL mode? I can't find any mention anywhere of being able to do this....

Thanks!

Mike
