Gitzo 1540T:

Load Capacity
17.6 lbs
Maximum Height
52.8"
Maximum Height w/o Column Extended
44.5"
Minimum Height
6.9"
Folded Length
16.1"
Weight
2.1 lbs
Price
$534.95 (with mail in rebate)

Feisol 3441

Load Capacity
13.24 lbs
Maximum Height
73.23"
Maximum Height w/o Column Extended
54.54"
Minimum Height
13.78"
Folded Length
16.93"
Weight
1.98 lbs
Price
$289.00

The big thing that strikes me about the Feisol is the maximum height. Almost 20 more inches than the Feisol. For me being 6'3", that is a big difference.

Anybody care to give some insight or thoughts? I've read Ben_r's review of the Gitzo, but can't only find a 3441S review.

Read through this thread from over at naturescapes.net (external link) and see if it provides you any light to a preference. Mind you most of the guys in this forum are pros who use their stuff a lot.

Are you referring to newer model GT1541T with 17.6 lbs since GT1540T has a max. load of only 9.9 lbs.

Feisol also has a newer model 3441S but the height is only at 50.3 in/70.1 in (without/with column extended) but max. load has increased to 22 lbs.

When buying tripods, I would suggest getting one that fit your height WITHOUT extending the column so 3441 would still be too short IMO. But since this is a traveler tripod, there is always going to be compromises because of the weight requirement. Obviously, GT1540T is way too short for you.

Markins has a new traveler Q3 ball head called Q3TR. Suppose to have a smaller base than Q3. However, with the 3 knobs sticking out, I am not sure if you can close the GT1541T completely... Make sure you don't go for the larger QR clamps too...

Huh, in those pics of the Q3T with the GT1541 they must have really pushed the leg to fit on the other side of the panning knob like that. It wouldnt fit like that easily for me...

This is as close as I could get it:

If you look at the pic closely, you can see that they extended the leg that goes beside the main locking knob on the Q3T. That gives a little bit more room so that the knob doesn't interfere as much with the leg lock. But of course, the legs aren't fully collapsed then.

Huh, yea I see that now.... But it still doesnt look like it would clear the knob... And that might cause the knob to scratch the leg... I dont know....
