I have been searching my mind for a way to layout a 1510 case (carry on size, rolling) to carry a 15 inch macbook pro + assorted ****e (cables and a external hard drive and its cables) and all my photo gear (40d grip, 8 cf cards, chargers, cables, 70-200 2.8 is, 17-50 2.8, 50 1.8, skyports, 580ex, oc e3, stofen, rocket blower, lens pen gels, filters.....) I have found something called the Photo StudioCruzer, which seems to be (http://www.casecruzer.com/studiocruzer/index.html (external link)) a 1510 with padded dividers and a fancy lid, my problem is that if I have to check it will the padded dividers and padding in the lid be enough protection from say a 4 metre drop... if the padded dividers aren't good enough but the lid is then could you replace the dividers with pick n pluck for added protection?

Thanks for any ideas

Padded dividers plus this: http://pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1510LOC (external link)
I have the 1510 and this was going to be my solution, but the weight is an issue for cabin carry-on so have decide to go with the Lowepro Vertex 200 instead and use the Pelican for other travel.

Equip:
Canon 1Ds MkII, 30D + Grip, G11,
16-35 f2.8L II, 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 f2.8L IS, 1.4x II, 580EX II, and all sorts of other stuff... ;)

That looks even less protective for the laptop then the studiocruzer though, I know that about 1.5 cm of pick n pluck on the sides and 3 cm on the bottom with the funny foam on the top in a 1300 case is good for a 4 metre drop and 4wd run over (by accident).... But, how would the dividers handle a 4 metre drop, and how would the lid laptop thing handle?

I now think that the StudioCruzer thing is the best solution with the thinktank modular system in the photo section so that I can easily take less gear when I need less gear...

My question is, if it has to be checked at some point, should I get a green one or cover it in stickers or something so that it is easy to spot if someone nicks it or anything of the sort...

I have a few questions....will you be checking your bag under the plane?

If so will it be baggage checked, or left plane side to be recovered plane side on a regional jet/turbo prop?

If you need the Pelican, look into the 1514, the 1514 is the 1510, but it already has the dividers in-place and it is far superior to pick-n-pluck. Pick-n-pluck can never be reconfigured once you set it up. Pick-n-pluck is messy, falls apart and is just not the best choice.

Porta-Brace makes a laptop sleeve that is designed to replace the top foam padding on a Pelican 1510/1514. You can check out the Porta-Brace laptop sleeve here:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …550LSO_Laptop_Sleeve.html (external link)

The Pelican StudioCruzer is a great product as well for use in the 1514 lid. I have seen photogs who use it and they like the product.....personally I have only used the Porta Brace case and been happy, but I would never doubt the abilities and protection of a Pelican product having used their products extensively.

My Pelican 1514 is covered all over in stickers, it is hard to miss coming off the baggage carousel.

For info on marking your bags for easy identification visit my blog for flying photogs at www.flyingwithfish.com (external link) , I have covered this topic, as well as making sure you gear does not get stolen (I can't help you when it comes to TSA/behind the scenes thefts) while in transit.

I was looking for something exactly like that porta brace, And even better if I have to check the photo gear I could remove the laptop(the only bit I would really worry about in a Pelican as the lid bends a fair bit when being run over) Just how padded is the padding on it?

Also if I am forced to check it how should I pack the photo gear to have maximum protection?

I was thinking of covering it in stickers, but do you know where to get stickers? (I have none at all)

And finally is there a place to buy the porta-brace other than B+H as it and the 1514 is out of stock there?
