gah so I just got the vivitar 285hv, what a nifty cheap flash I think Ill get good use out of it..
but I also bought a wein peanut slave for it so I could fire it with my sigma ef dg super....

problem..
its not firing...
am I doing something wrong? Does the wein peanut just suck as Ive read abit in these forums?
am I even inserting it correctly? It doesn't really click into the bottom. I just push it in until you can't anymore, not forcefully of course.
help would be great thanks

you can't shoot the sigma in ETTL, the preflash will throw off the optical slave.

Troubleshooting 101 (see also: LightRules,perryge):
1) RTFM.
2) Repeat Step 1.

Where are you putting the peanut? From what I remember, the 285HV has a proprietary PC sync port, not a standard PC sync port.

Any pictures of your setup?

Are you using the pictured wein peanut?

The peanut requires a higher trigger voltage than the Vivitar provides. It's stupid. And it's recommended to be used on the 285's by Wein. I had the same problem with two brand new 285s and two new peanuts, neither of them would trigger the flashes more than 1-2% of the time. I recommend getting the Cactus V2s wireless triggers on eBay. They cost about $10 more than 2 peanuts and work 99% of the time in any light.

If the Wein peanut has a PC socket on it and the Vivitar has its proprietory receptacle, then you need the short PC cord to go between the peanut and the flash. You should have gotten the PC cord with the flash. I don't know that liquefied isn't right, but I used optical triggers on 283s for years in the pre-digital age. None of them plugged directly into the flash. They all required the short PC cord or attached to the hot shoe. If you have all the parts, it is certainly cheap enough to try.
