No, the real reality check comes when you are in Livingstone, Zambia (a relatively rich city in a relatively rich country) and people want to trade 6 bananas (worth less than 1$) for a wooden carved animal... And then you cross to Zimbabwe and it is even worse!

Yes, you go to places, the rich places, like Nigeria or South Africa, where these 'richest african countries' have so many people living off less than $1 a day.

We were told off after 1 week by our "personal guard" for over-tipping, as it would (a) put off locals as the people who ran the bars/ eating establishments would expect more tips from even the locals (who wouldn't have been able to afford it) and for (b) militants coming by for money...

Oh that and every place was full of prostitutes....girls who had been clearly taken from their homes and forced to go to bars etc...

It was so sad to see, and a huge reality check on how bad it could be...

Thanks Wu....I have some "bog-standard" shots too that everyone has to take:

Well done! Your skies are beautiful!

You could really go naked out of every market. People wanted to trade you hat, shoes, shirt, socks, ....

I am looking forward to more of Africa through your eyes. It is amazing what we all take for granted.

Okay. I took the same shot with the filter removed and the IS turned off. The IQ was minimally improved, but still well below acceptable standards.

I'm starting to think the problem might be in the IS. I did take a shot with the IS turned off and the filter on, and it was even worse, but just slightly so.

Regardless, it's nothing I can fix, so off it goes.

Sorry to hear that Chief. Hopefully they'll figure it out and get it back in time.

Can anyone tell me what blue ray dvd is? And do you have to have a special dvd player to play one? (I feel like I close my eyes for a day and something new is out that I don't know what it is..)

Blu ray is the new "latest and greatest"...you have to have a Blu ray player to play a Blu ray disk....but a Blu ray player will play your old disks.

The best deal on a BluRay player is to buy the Playstation 3. It's built into it, and it costs less than a dedicated BluRay player in most cases.

Yup. DVDs are usually "recorded" using a red laser, but they found a "blue laser" that records so much more information onto a disc - don't ask me how, no idea. So to retrieve it you need a Blue Ray Disk player. However, the new machines can read and play the older DVDs. It does hold a significant amount of detail more, so that is why the sound and picture quality is better...

Think of RAW vs JPEG (small size) in terms of compression and detail lost as a difference
