First my apologies to everyone that has entered fair pictures up to now. It appears that I have made the faulty assumption that the fair rules were clear as to what you would be judged on. So....for future reference...here are some rules that you might not see in print, but I guarantee you will be scored on.

1. Most fairs and other exhibits specify 16"x20" as being the maximum dimension. You are expected to present your work in 16x20 format, sized 16x20 finished.

2. For a 16x20 format show image, the actual print must be formatted, sized and printed as 11x14...don't print it as 10x14 or any other size...you will have points deducted for non-standard format.

3. Framing....the prints need to be framed with a simple black metal frame, other frames may be accepted, but points will be deducted.

4. Matting....can you say white? Single or double matting is acceptable...as long as it is white...other colors may or may not even be accepted....points will certainly be deducted.

5. Glazing....glass...just glass...and make sure it is clean on the inside and out...I've seen crazy deductions for fingerprints on the inside of the glass. If the rules specify acrylic glazing...obviously you need to comply...but if not specified...use glass.

6. Assembly...make sure the corners of the frame are fit together snugly...make sure there are no stray marks visible on the mat or the print...and be sure to double check for hairs or other fibers before final assembly. Be sure to use a full dimension backer board to give the rear of the frame a finished look. Use the correct lock in channel clips on the rear to hold the wire hanger. Mount the clips exactly 1/3 of the way down from the top....cut and install the hanger wire so that the top of the arc of the wire comes no closer than 1" from the top of the frame.

7. Identification....on the back...tape a business card to the reverse side using wide, clear packing tape. If necessary, it can then be taped over until the completion of the judging with a piece of paper and masking tape.

There may be some variations from these rules locally, but they seem to be pretty standard among the places I have submitted images and the shows that I have participated in as a judge. Hope this helps for future shows.

NOW YOU TELL ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:oops::cry::rolleyes: I used black mats.... sigh.... And of course our fair max print size was 8x10.... which I did.... Oh well.... then perhaps there won't even be a chance of any ribbons based on the above things I didn't know..... But what the heck, I used store bought frames, and I was given a hearty thank you for actually prepping it for wire hanging.... seems some entrants did not do that here..... I suppose the only way to do it is to learn from it.... it is yet to be seen how it goes... I suppose if you don't have oodles of money (I already put more into than I should've) you shouldn't enter the freakin contest....Sheeeeeesh!!!!!

Your black mats are ok here Jennifer...MSF doesn't specify or adhere to mat judging.

Congrats!

Not really... but they are two different beasts. I know someone with the Wii and PS3 - they serve two different purposes and two different genres of games.

Thanks, Scott.

The graphics on the Wii aren't nearly as good as those on the PS3, but like Scott said, they're targeted at different crowds. Serious Gamers (like the Chief ;)) go for the PS3 or XBox, and Families go for the Wii.

Ours were not to be framed (as written in the rules), but matting was allowed, and I waited too long to find mats. The local shop was out of precut mats in the size I needed (12 X 16 isn't that common for them), and wanted something like $15 a mat to custom cut a single mat. I thought I'd be clever and buy a precut one cut for a smaller size and then cut it to the right size at home, but I broke my cutter blade and didn't have a spare handy.

Interesting, at the county fair here, when I entered some last year. Specifically, no frames, mattes allowed but something like a dry mount of foam board preferred. I believe 11x14 was the largest, but I can't remember specifically.

I plan on no longer entering the county fair since it is simply too much crap in terms of consistency of judging, family snapshot won out over some people's AMAZING works. It wasn't worth the effort I put into it all.

Oh and I would be remiss if I didn't..... crib bumpers aren't the bestest thing in the world.... (external link)Although I'm quite certain you know this..... If I've over stepped... I apologize....

One thing about blue ray is that you need an HD TV that's fairly large with 1080p to be able to see a noticeable improvement.

Thanks Permie, I'm caught up.

That's all good to know. Doesn't seem like it's a necc.

I'm quite the geek , and voted for the Wii over the PS3 for the additional physical activity. The kids can find ways around some of it, but it's not as much fun that way. I can say that the Wii Fit balance board was probably part of the reason I lost some weight this summer, and will definitely help on those not so wonderful fall and winter days that we have here on an all too regular basis.

The only part that isn't fun is when your 6 year old, who is flailing his arms around like a wild man, beats you regularly at Wii Bowling by a wide margin, and remains the owner of the highest score in the house months after we bought the thing.

what's a wii fit balance board? And what games do you use it with? We got a package thing and a few games.

Congratulations Mark!!!! Is the baby here yet??

Physical Therapists use it too for range of motion exercises!

Hey yeah, did we ever get baby news yet?

and I read that (re: PT's using it for therapy) I think it's an inventive way to keep people from being sedentary.

Older hardware is 32-bit based and requires the 32-bit OS, newer hardware is 64-bit and runs better on the 64-bit version. They released two different versions so that those with older hardware could still use Vista. They did the same with XP, there is XP 64-bit.

So this shouldn't really affect me at all then since I don't have any old windows hardware right?

I'll bookmark this for future. I DID talk to the woman today and eventually asked her to look at my photos. Initially she said "the judges don't judge on size". Then she said "usually snapshots/family shots are 8x10" and after she said that I said "um...I'd like you to look at these then and explain their scores to me". She said "no problem" (she was very nice" and she looked at them and after each one said "I don't know why this didn't make it." For the monochrome ones, she said that the judges scored them overall very low in comparison to the color but she said each of the ones I submitted should have easily made the scores and FINALLY at the end she said "I hate to say it but it had to be their size". I felt much better after the talk.
