This was going to be a fair sized multi-quote, but by the time I got caught up, everyone else had said what I was going to say so I truncated the quote...

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee, my first attempt at a panoramic...

I know it looks a bit crap, because the colours are all messed up a little, but I thought I'd test it out...you can click on it to see the original version...

And this one that I took, I didn't realise how it would turn out, but it makes you want to take a step back!!

A little blending on the sky and the pano will be perfect. I have the same problem because I really don't know how to expose so all the shots have the same sky tones. I pretty much gave up on panoramics because of it.

The shot looking over the falls is excellent!

Thanks, guys! This is the first time I've ever entered anything outside of POTN, so I was very happy to get any accepted at all. Anything more than that was way more than I expected.

Good job, David.

First my apologies to everyone that has entered fair pictures up to now. It appears that I have made the faulty assumption that the fair rules were clear as to what you would be judged on. So....for future reference...here are some rules that you might not see in print, but I guarantee you will be scored on.

1. Most fairs and other exhibits specify 16"x20" as being the maximum dimension. You are expected to present your work in 16x20 format, sized 16x20 finished.

2. For a 16x20 format show image, the actual print must be formatted, sized and printed as 11x14...don't print it as 10x14 or any other size...you will have points deducted for non-standard format.

3. Framing....the prints need to be framed with a simple black metal frame, other frames may be accepted, but points will be deducted.

4. Matting....can you say white? Single or double matting is acceptable...as long as it is white...other colors may or may not even be accepted....points will certainly be deducted.

5. Glazing....glass...just glass...and make sure it is clean on the inside and out...I've seen crazy deductions for fingerprints on the inside of the glass. If the rules specify acrylic glazing...obviously you need to comply...but if not specified...use glass.

6. Assembly...make sure the corners of the frame are fit together snugly...make sure there are no stray marks visible on the mat or the print...and be sure to double check for hairs or other fibers before final assembly. Be sure to use a full dimension backer board to give the rear of the frame a finished look. Use the correct lock in channel clips on the rear to hold the wire hanger. Mount the clips exactly 1/3 of the way down from the top....cut and install the hanger wire so that the top of the arc of the wire comes no closer than 1" from the top of the frame.

7. Identification....on the back...tape a business card to the reverse side using wide, clear packing tape. If necessary, it can then be taped over until the completion of the judging with a piece of paper and masking tape.

There may be some variations from these rules locally, but they seem to be pretty standard among the places I have submitted images and the shows that I have participated in as a judge. Hope this helps for future shows.

Our fair here has similar rules, but glass and framing is specifically prohibited. Prints are required to be mounted on either a white or black mat board that is 16X20 in size, but the print can be any size, even 4X6. The prints can be matted as well.

Lots taller. The day I met Permie, I wanted to give her a hug, and ended up clutching her ankle.

It's a nice ankle, though.

I've heard of a foot fetish, but ankles?

OMG Mike she is TOOOOOOOOOOO freakin' cute!!!!!!!!!! That's awesome!!!!!!

Thanks.

I like the ABC's very sophistocated, and easily 'upgraded' once he gets older.... although the pink baskets..... ummmm dooood he's a boy!

I think that was our biggest obstacle. We were not liking any of the "baby" stuff for some reason. Maybe because Haley is 3 now and has her "big girl room". I don't know.

Oh and I would be remiss if I didn't..... crib bumpers aren't the bestest thing in the world.... (external link)Although I'm quite certain you know this..... If I've over stepped... I apologize....

No need to apologize. We know the risks. I also know that babies can get their arms and legs caught between the rails. It is kind of a catch 22 if you ask me. I prefer the soft bumper to that of the hard rails.

G'moo.

We are the proud parents of a new wii.:lol:

That's all good to know. Doesn't seem like it's a necc.

what's a wii fit balance board? And what games do you use it with? We got a package thing and a few games.

Hey yeah, did we ever get baby news yet?

and I read that (re: PT's using it for therapy) I think it's an inventive way to keep people from being sedentary.

So this shouldn't really affect me at all then since I don't have any old windows hardware right?

I'll bookmark this for future. I DID talk to the woman today and eventually asked her to look at my photos. Initially she said "the judges don't judge on size". Then she said "usually snapshots/family shots are 8x10" and after she said that I said "um...I'd like you to look at these then and explain their scores to me". She said "no problem" (she was very nice" and she looked at them and after each one said "I don't know why this didn't make it." For the monochrome ones, she said that the judges scored them overall very low in comparison to the color but she said each of the ones I submitted should have easily made the scores and FINALLY at the end she said "I hate to say it but it had to be their size". I felt much better after the talk.

These are wonderful!! I just love the dichotomy of the little with the big!

No baby news that I've seen....

Glad you got some answers... I'm sorry that their judging fell down to size though... it seems a bit ridiculous... and like mom said earlier... what happened to the photograph/photography of it all??

That happens to me all the time with multi-quotes!!!

Interesting rules.... no framing... wow..... THAT would have totally been easier for me!!!!!!

MOOO! Everyone!!!

Lisa, I'm so glad you had that conversation with her. Well done!

I just picked up my prints as well. I was really excited to see that they had printed one of my prints in the book.

Like I've said before, I try to take these contests as feedback and learning. Anything beyond that is a bonus.

Frames are specifically not allowed at our fair, but my experience is that it's best to print a pic at the maximum allowable size in any contest. I think they just show better that way.

Great pics today everyone. Sorry I didn't quote them.

Briefly. She was rather curt. End of a long day, I'd guess. Not her usual bubbly self. But the person with her was almost effusive!

You should have gotten a photography book with all the results.

The girl with her at the time we were there said she asked one of the judges "so...are you happy with the results now that you see the show up and together" and one of the judges said "um...it's "interesting". I guess that when they looked at some of the photos close up they weren't happy with the quality. I was glad to hear that too.

I'm not surprised she was curt. There were several people asking for explanations when we were there.

Looking at some of the shots that were exhibited had to be embarrassing for the judges. Some of them were really, really bad.

That is the worst part about the Clackamas County Fair, they do not provide any feedback or any explanation, making it seem even the more arbitrary.

yeah, I think feedback is important. I think when I re-open the SMWYG contest in October I'm going to make sure and give it.
